I apologize if this is old news or an obvious question but I've searched the internet and this site and can't seem to find the answer.

I'm very interested in the Garmin 305 but I really want to be able to see a compass heading (just N, NE, SW is adequate) on a main view. Is that something it supports. None of the screenshots I've seen show this?

I might even spring for the 705 when it appears, but I'm also curious if it has a display mode that puts less map and more other data (speed, odometer, compass heading, cadence, HR) on the screen at one time.

Thanks.

Yes - only have to set the compass up on the display.

You can see all of the available screens, including the compass screen, here:

Sweet. Thanks for that great link. Not sure why I didn't find it before.
Do you guys know if I could put the compass heading in one of the fields on the customizable screens?

I freaking love this forum.

You cannot put the compass "face" on the customizable screens. However, you can put the "Heading" field in which tells you the current direction you are traveling. You have to be moving to get a reading.

It gives you the direction as N,S,E,W with (I think) varied NE etc. bearings too, but it does not give you the heading in degrees as far as I can tell.

... Garmin 305 ...

Forerunner 305 or Edge 305??

Which one are you referring to??

The Edge 305 has a compass screen but I think it's "directions" are in reference to a predetermine "course" (bearing to next waypoint, etc).

I don't think you can use it for general open field navigating.

I've never used the compass but now I gotta see if it will "just navigate" ...

Edge 305

What I primarily want (in this case) is just for one of the fields on the main screen to give me a general heading, ideally at least to 8 points of sensitivity (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW).
