Touring - Wool jerseys

Hi all. I live in the uk and want to get my self a good long sleeved wool jersey, but its hard to find them and when you do find them they are silly money. Any ideas?

Wool jerseys are expensive but you'll wear it a lot whenever it's cool or wet (a climate not unheard of in the UK). Buy one great looking jersey because it will be the only jersey your friends see for the next six months. Look for 100% wool, no synthetics, to experience all the advantages of wool.

I have merino wool jerseys from each of the three links above and they are all fantastic. Buy one wool garment each year. Rivendell's wool black tights (actually long underwear bottoms, but no one will know) work great, look great, and are inexpensive.

I have a wool jersey I bought in the 1970's and I made a big mistake!....I didn't buy a dozen more. I wear it today at the exclusion of all the others..it's soft and comfortable next to the skin, never is even damp during a ride, holds it's colors forever. Just watch the moths!

I don't bother with wool jerseys, I just buy merino wool tops and wear them instead. On a tour, I rarely use those back pockets anyway.

The Merino wool blended ones are decent, I can get several days out of them before washing.
Wool spoils you, today, I rode in to work (15 miles) with a poly jersey and already it stinks. Wool rocks (even blended wool).

Me too, I ride in Smartwool T-shirts. I picked a few up 3 long sleeve ones for $30 each on sale.
The best thing about them is you can wear them a few days in a row and they don't smell. However,
they are a bit loose and I sometimes get nipple rash.

I have the Taranaki model base layer t-shrt in M. It is quite stretchy and long so go for the smaller size for a close fit.

They are best quality NZ product at reasonable prices with really good service.

I wear these shirts from LL Bean. Not designed for cycling, but a very nice shirt. I own 4.

I wear the short sleeve beezer and fausto jerseys all summer. I also have a pair of the el fito knickers and several of their base layer shirts for fall winter. All great - no itch, no smell.

You can also look at icebreaker for other wool items. They're nice as well.

I forget how much the MEC ones were, but not bad. However, the ones I've gotten from the thrift shops were about $5 each. I bought them all with cycling in mind, but wear one for regular wear now.

I have a couple of Smartwool merino tops which are excellent, but would also recommend the cycling specific merino\polyester blend tops from http://www.groundeffect.co.nz/products-SUM.htm The median trip and berglar tops are super, plus slightly thicker sub-merino top for winter.

us army surplus cold weather shirts 100 wool and dirt cheap found one at a thrift store for about a dollar its alittle itchy though super warm.

I have a couple of those LL Bean duofold shirts going back to high school days, they are heavy and scratchy compared to smartwool (though 20+ yrs older, the new ones could well be softer/smoother)

Thanks for the tip. Just what I was looking for. These kind of shirts are perfect under a shell on colder (for SD) days.

thought it was a good buy, only paid £29.99. Half price on special. Its 100% fine merino, so should be just what i was looking for. Quite retro aswell which is a bonus, i'm not too keen on the modern looking stuff.
