I don't have a blog, but I read and post on several. I'm also pretty ignorant of HTML formatting. One of the blogs I follow recently put this handy formatting key right before the comments section. It shows up with every article.
HTML Formatting Tips
Italics - <em>Your text</em>
Bold - <strong>Your text</strong>
Insert image* - <img src="http://www.yourimageurl.com">
Insert link - <a href="http://www.yourlink.com">Text of your link</a>
*Please do not insert images over 400px wide and 50KB in size. Thanks.
I'd love to see more blogs do this. :)

Some blog and forum programs have those formatting features like B, I, U, links, built in, like BF. I think too, the webmaster or blog owner can add them if they wish.
For blogs that do not have the formatting buttons, you can make a cheatsheet for yourself with the basic html codes. The html codes should be the same for all blogs.
knotty
<I> </I> also works for italics. B works for bold and U works for underlining. gotta love HTML 1.0
Although I still write a lot of HTML by hand, I make gratuitous use of Blogger's quick buttons for formatting
I would have thought the first suggestion would be a link back to the forums. ;)
