I rode with an old “friend” yesterday. I put it in quotes, because he really is an old and close friend, but we have never ridden together and he ummm, surprised, me a bit on the ride. He has done multiple Death rides and just did a 12 hour mountain bike race on his single speed. So I knew he was a hammer. I’ve never ridden in the south bay and when we left from his house he asked me what I was up for. “Oh, maybe 50-60 some hills, but was planning on kind of a zone 2 spin today” I said. He said cool we’ll go this route that has “some hills”.
9 miles of flat spinning and then…Hicks and Mount Umunhum. I had no idea where we were, or where the top was. Man, that is a grinder. Luckily I like to climb and ended up feeling pretty good. But in my book ‘some hills” doesn’t not equal a 4 mile 10% (18.3% max) 2100 foot climb!
I need to spend more time in the South Bay – great riding!
