Road Cycling - FSA Pro Team Carbon cranks vs Dura Ace ?

What benefit will I get by replacing my Dura Ace with FSA Pro Team Carbon cranks ?

It'll look nicer. :D I have the FSA Carbon Pro (not the team) and as far as I can tell from having ridden Dura-Ace, there's no noticable difference other than the FSA is a bit lighter and just looks sweet. Personally speaking, if I you have a little extra cash, spring for the FSA cranks but if you're budgetting, I'd apply that money to the best wheels I could get. Some people tell me the D-A rings will shift smoother but I haven't noticed a difference there either.

If you had less then DA on i say sure,why not but heck,DA vs fsa vs money wont show up much difference.If your wheelset isnt all that,i agree,upgrade instead that.

Does anyone have an update for this comparison?

My 10 yo Dura Ace BB is shot. So, I'm upgrading soon with a new BB and crankset.

I'm leaning toward the FSA pro team after reading that it's a little stiffer than the new Dura Ace.

I'm assuming either of these cranks will work with 8 sp Shimano, but I'll email FSA and Dura Ace to be sure.

Perhaps the old older Duira ace yes but certainly not the new one.

Are we talking 10 speed or 9 speed here.

either way, as an owner of an FSA Team Issue Carbon Pro i can tell you that it is stiff, skuffs easily and is in no way a better investment than a Dura Ace, especially the new Dura Ace.

FSA will be copying the Outboard bearing concpet for 2005 on their Team Issue cranks. May be owrthwhil e waiting a bit then.

PS: Carbon cranks are just pimpy but don't help performance at all.

May as well get some 10speed kit if i were you.
Ultegra is around the corner. Having two extra gears will improve your performance more than a few grammes of some pimpy ne cranks

Thanks! I need to do something about my bb now because it's started making a grinding noise when I'm pedaling slowly and it's original cartridge stuff so I imagine it's shot. I have a race in 5 weeks and I'd like the BB fixed by then.

One more thing I forgot to mention. My crankset is hosed. The threads where the extractor goes in are stripped. I believe I can finagle the crankset off, but I'm not sure I'd be able to get it off a second time! So, I need to do something now. I like the idea of 10 speed or at least 9 speed. But I don't want to go in debt with this so, how does this sound...2004 Dura Ace crankset with the proprietary BB and upgrade the rest of the drive train next year? Is this possible? Has anyone tried to run the 7800 cranks with an 8 speed drive train?

Shimano says the new chainrings on the 7800 are only partly compatible with 9 speed and I have the older 8 speed.

chainrings are not really a problem. I run a 9 speed FSA Team issue Carbon Pro crank (octalink) with 10s Campagnolo record and it's superb.
Your 8s chain will notbe a problem because it's only slightly wider than a 9s chain which is only slightly wider than a 10S chain.
You can always save the 10s chainrings and fit 9s or 8s rings to the new DA cranks...

Moonshot, try retaping the threads on the crank. Remember that the crank is AL not steel. I have the same crank and group, aka 7400 DA group from 91. I still have the crank and BB on my Serotta now along with the 7400 brakes and front derailluer. I upgraded to 9 speed in 01 when my rear lever rattled so bad no one wanted to ride with me :p . I tried the 7700 crank a bud has and it works just fine, but I did not like it over the 7400. Change the chain if you go 9 speed on the rear or buy the upgrade kit, levers, chain, RD, cassette. The 7400 rear derailluer is not compatable with 9 speed. The parallagram action they used changed when they went 9 speed and is now standard across the line. The 7700 series crank is still available if you want to save some $$

Why don't you look for something cheap and used on Ebay? That way, you can replace the BB and crankset cheap, race in 5 weeks, and save up for the future big upgrade.
