Hi folks,
I am hoping this is the place to ask, you all have soo much knowledge about these things...

I am looking at a Amica folder that is a single speed, and wondering if there is a place to source a 20" wheel with the hub already in it. I know that one can buy the hubs; but the complications of swapping it out with different spoke lengths and all are beyond my reach.

So, I am hoping for the easy fix. Do I have other worries about width?

thanks!

I had my own conversion from single speed to a three speed (see the web sites listed below) done at a LBS. It doubled the purchase price almost at once. The best place to ask is your LBS first. They might know of a local distributor that can ship a already installed three speed rear wheel. The easiest and better approuch is to buy a bike already with all the major features like the drive train along with the actual parts you want. Sometimes buying up might save you $$$ in the long run with better components/accessories plus being the way you want without going all out and bringing complication and draining your bank accounts at once.

If you would consider going with a steel wheel (rim brakes work better on modern aluminum wheels than with steel), e-bay is an option. There are plenty of older 20" wheels with Sturmey Archer SA (3 speed) hubs available from the Schwinn Sting Ray era. Add a shifter, and you could be in business for around $50. Or, use the hub and spokes to build up an aluminum wheel.

Bike Friday in Eugene, OR sells tandems/singles with 20" 3 speeds hubs. Give 'em a holler.

You can pick up AW hubs really really cheap in the UK, like under £10 (used of course) on eBay. You could pick up a rim for a similar amount, find a friendly wheelbuilder - bingo!
