Winter Cycling - Studded tires for a fixie

I've got a fixed-gear road bike with 700x23 Velocity Deep-V Rims, and I want some studded tires for it. what kind should I get?

I was at MEC yesterday (my favoite store in the whole wide world BTW) and was looking at thier Schwalbe Ice Studs for $55.
I'm considering getting them so I can continue commuting on my fixie this winter. I just need to check to see if the 38mm tire will fit in my frame.

I ride Nokian on my fixie, but not on deep rims, I have a set of winter rims.

You aren't going to find any studded tires to fit your bike as there isn't nearly enough clearance on the frame or fork. The narrowest studded tires 700c I know of are Nokian 106, which are 35mm.

That's apples and oranges when it comes to tight frame and fork clearance.

My 27" frame will hold a perfectly true 35mm but its different frame to frame, in theory a 27' = 32mm X 700c. Looking at your 23mm tire you need 6mm clearance on either side of the tire and 6mm above your tire for the 35mm tire to rub gently against the frame, aim for an extra 10mm all around for a good fenderless fit. More for a fender. More for a warped wheel.

Don't forget snow build up on the fork!

I have 38mm Tioga Bloodhounds on my Bianchi Campione. It is tight with about 1/4" clearance on either side but it fits. I didn't have any clearance issues with snow buildup while commuting last year.

A lot of guys make their own. If you have 72 hours to waste, plugging screws, I would suggest that. :)

Your right!

I was on the verge of rippin' off the gears/shifters last March but my wife convinced me to buy my 06 Langster on closeout from Bow Cycle so, the Bianchi gears lived to see another season.

They may cause your bicycle to implode upon contact with a white belt or a bandana, though.

Peter White Cycles claims they'll have the Nokian A10 available in Dec. of '07 @ 700c x 32. Check here for details (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/studdedtires.asp) (about 1/3 down the page). I've checked the Suomoi Tyres website (http://www.suomityres.fi/) (it appears Soumi bought the Nokian bicycle tires unit) and don't see a mention of a studded tire in that size so we'll see if they show up...

I would like to try these but don't know if they'll fit in my SS/FG group buy IRO. I have a set of 30mm cross that fit (Ritchey SpeedMax Cross 700c x 30, Nashbar @ $12 each). I guess I might have to find a SS/FG cross frame if I find the lack of tire selection for my current IRO to be hindering my winter commute.

I was hoping to find some Continental Top Contact Winters but those seem to be limited to 37mm in the 700c wheel size.
