Fifty Plus (50+) - How am I doing?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Great ride yesterday, weather couldn’t have been better lots of sunshine and no wind!
After negotiating city streets, I had one 17 mile section of continuous, flat, smooth asphalt with a clean wide shoulder. Riding solo, I averaged just over 19 mph for that section.
Can I keep up with you guys on the flats or do I have more work to do?

Please stop bragging. I hope that was downhill and with the wind.

Next time take your bike instead of your motorscooter.

You're going to need to get slower to ride with me:)
Well, I can still beat that. But 19 mph is pretty good. Also, I learned a long time ago that I am faster than some and slower than others and that ain't gonna change. I guess I could train and train and train and there would still be faster people. Besides it is not as if anyone will ever pay me to ride my bike. So as long as I enjoy myself and stay fit, does the speed really matter? Well it does because it matters some to me but it is better to ride slowly than not at all.

Now get some hills in to slow you Down.
Not saying that Flat roads are easy as they still take fitness and skill to get to 19mph for a couple of miles. But if you want to improve the body, get some hills in and see how you improve on the Flat bits. 19 mph is good for me down slopes with a tailwind, but give me a downhill and I enjoy it. Give me an uphill bit and that is fun- or is it madness setting in.

+1 Pat. I've been reading this forum for awhile now. From the little snippets I get, I'm a bit in awe of what this group of people accomplish on a bike. I started riding again about a year ago after a very long lay-off. All of it has been solo or with my wife. I want to start doing some group rides and while I'd like to say it doesn't matter that I'll be the guy that everybody is waiting on at the regroup point, I'd prefer that it wasn't me! :)
Great speed. I'll be right behind you. Way behind you.

You are obviously riding in the wrong gear. Shift to a much higher gear, a much lower gear or learn to ride the brakes more. ;)
That's a very respectable speed. Now you can shoot for 20 miles in your first hour! :)

PI - You always have more work to do. But you're doing great.

My experince during this time of year is that anytime you don't feel wind, it means your riding with a tailwind. :)
