I have seen spring loaded roof racks strong enough for tandems. The rack pulls down to the side of your car where you secure the bike to the frame. the tensioned springs provide most of the force to lift the bike up to a flat position on the roof. The is a shop in Orange County, CA that specializes in all sorts of roof racks. They may have one. Ask in the SoCal forun.

Much, much, much easier to put our Tandemania Comp right down the middle of our Mazda MPV than on top of it. Did I mention that it is much, much, much faster, too?

Don't know if its available in Australia but it was much cheaper than both the Yakama or Thule tandem mount.

Toss our tandem inside our Honda Accord station wagon.
For long hauls remove 1 or 2 wheels.
Short hauls, let front wheel dangle out of rear of car, put some padding on wheel, put bungee on hatch and pull it down, attach bungee to anchor bolt under rear bumper.
Takes less than 2 minutes . . . off we go!

Having a freewheeling hub is the best for us...

but I say...
No that is not what happens...
we have only been ride as a pair for two months...
but within a few days we rode "in-sync"
My lady can see my legs go around and she likes to get in time.
The huge advantages are [for us]...
Starting off [remembering my lady is disabled] is very smooth [no delay while I clip my feet in]
I never jerk her by going backwards [even a little bit dose jerk]
And the big one is... she can rest while I keep going [in our case this is half the rideing time] she get out of the house and goes farther then she ever could before. We go places she couldn't go on her own.
So for us having freewheeling is the best thing ever!!

You're going about it the wrong way. Get a very small car, a rear rack, and put the car on the tandem instead of the other way around. :)
