View Full Version : fairing of a catrike speed?
Im looking to put a fairing on the front of my catrike speed for the nasty seattle wet winter. I have been looking around and found they only suggest a mueller windwrap xt small front bubble. And while this will keep my feet dry I was looking for something a little longer. Has anyone put a long fairing on their speed?
Thanks

My best friend bought my old Windcheetah and took it up to Zzip for a fairing. (about 50 miles North of here)
He ended up with full fairing, similar to the ones used on Tour Easy's. Not a body sock set-up, just the large front bubble.
IIRC, the bubble was about $300, but the tilting bracket hardware was about $500. That made it so that the bubble lifted up for mounting/dismounting from the trike, and then pivoted down for riding.
Very cool and stupid fast! He could easily top 50 mph on descents!
You would still need goggles to ride in the rain, as your head is just above the rear edge of the fairing.
Yah thats the price I keep seeing but they only list the large bubble fairing for the Catrike Road and the small for the Catrike speed. I cant imagine there is that much difference but they only list the tiny bubble fairing for the speed. anyone know why this might be?

Yep, in both 2003 & 2004; Zzip Design "Chopper" fairing:

BB was barely large enough; but it held the flip-up hardware well.

I think my buddy had to have the brackets "modified" to fit the 'Cheetah. It likely also helped that he was able to take the trike to the Zzip factory.
Here's the only picture of it that I could find easily. Sure was tough keeping up with him! (my oldest son and I are on the 2 seater BikeE) :p
Still hoping someone out there can tell me or show me pics of a catrike speed with a large front fairing. I was told today that my LBS guy talked with MR. Mueller and that it was basically impossible. I really dont want to hear that so someone please come forward with a way or a brand that will work.
PS apperently the reason they dont work is the line of sight is interefered by the top of the fairing.
HELP PLEASE. It will be raining soon and I would like some protection.
Thanks

You could always try out one of these. Overall, the price doesn't seem that awful bad. protection from weather and faster too!
or you could go this direction.

this may be what you are looking for though......... cheaper than an entire body, although, I would go for the whole body with the canopy kit.
This is the velokit... interesting to say the least.

Hmm... $1000 for the BlueSky hard body *with belly pan* or $975 for the nylon-and-vinyl Velokit with open bottom. The choice wouldn't be hard for me (if I had a trike I wanted to fair.)

May make the choice harder for some. My hard shell fairing is 20 pounds (+5 for mounts/braces). I gave up on weight but the cloth Velokit may be lighter (but I only know one side of the story). A Catrike is much lighter than mine; and the sidways pull on a corner might just pull a Speed over.

Thanks for the leads, that blue sky is cool, I hope it will fit my speed. That is a good price and hopfully it doesnt wiegh 50 lbs or something.

I just got a used Velokit that I haven't set up yet (next week, hopefully.) It's for a Catrike Road. The Blue Sky set up looks great. But it looks like there's no information given about mounting hardware. I can tell you for sure that the Velokit is the real deal and the mounting has been figured out and well implemented. It's not clear from the Blue Sky website how the panels are mounted to various makes of trike.

I would think that it would be pretty darn easy mounting the blue sky body parts. Probably wouldn't need that much hardware. I've always had good luck mounting tailfairings with 3m spray foam. Wrap the frame parts in plastic wrap or tape. Get the fairing situated the way you want it and spray the expanding foam onto the internal fairing area that is in contact with or near the frame part , tube or structure. Stuff holds great and is incredibly light too. I used the razz fazz fairing all summer with nothing attaching it to the vk2 other than the expanding foam.
You can always start a dialog with whichever (or both) company you're interested in. If the conversation goes dark, well, there's your answer. You would think that any company interested in expanding their product line would be interested in helping you with a successful implementation and to learn form your efforts.
One comment on the Blue Sky; they make a very nice veloshell for the Electrathon trikes. That is where their fairing comes from, after all. I would hope that the mounting hardware will allow for tilting the fairing so you can get in and out of the trike.
Is it me or does it look like this guy is holding the fairing *backwards*? I think I'd want the bigger end of the bubble straight into the wind in this type of arragement. That is if I were to put Aero as a priority over keeping dry, though.
