Article doesn't say how seriously hurt the cyclist was. He was hit in the head though.

we had a cyclist die after being hit by a train about 16 years ago

http://www.helmets.org/bcstudy.htm

A woman in her mid-thirties was riding her bicycle on a May evening about 7:00 p.m. when she rode onto a railroad crossing as a train was moving by and struck the front corner of a rail car.

Conditions were clear, dry and light. The train had whistled prior to the crossing and its head lamps were on.

The cyclist was impaired by alcohol at the time.

The cyclist died immediately of massive intrathoracic haemorrhage.

Good lord, another one? Sorry, no sympathy here.

I ride the train every day and people get hit around here all the time (combination of suicides and accidents.)

One has to be working really hard to get hit by one of man's most massive public transportation creations (or freight or otherwise.) Uh, didn't see the 375 TON TRAIN coming? Had your iPod on and couldn't hear the TRAIN?

Train tracks mean watch the hell out.

[shudder] This one makes me cringe.

edit - this one is really not for the faint of heart. It's amazing what's on the internet.

Good lord...Train tracks mean watch the hell out.

"I saw him ride up the sidewalk toward the train, and that's when he jerked his wheel and just lost control," Johnson fell to the ground, Cornett said, and was hit in the head by the passing train.

I don't know.

Even if it was an accident, just how the heck does someone get so close as to be hit if he fell, unless the respect (and space) trains deserve wasn't given showing it wasn't an accident, but poor judgement in giving the space needed for a passing train.

(I wonder what his blood alcohol level was?)

I'll pass. I saw one of my neighbors get hit by a train as he tried to beat it across the tracks. The train won. :(

Like atomicbob, I also ride Caltrain daily. There have been more deaths than usual this year, including a cyclist or two riding across the tracks, if I recall. We also had a cyclist who swung into the path of a light rail train in San Jose this year and was killed.

Then there's this story (http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_7225128) of the family who's suing Caltrain for negligence. Jorge apparently trespassed onto the rail ROW when he was struck.
