Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Ot: Ot

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

OK. So when did we start with all of the Off Topic Topics?

Here you go, kiddies. Have fun: http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=198

About five minutes ago when you posted this one.

it makes a ton of sense. this forum has always been all over the place. this is a good way to self-regulate, so that people with chainline questions and frame questions don't learn about NYC cops or being pwned by professors.

To the contrary, professors and cops are the #1 enemy of fixed-gear riders everywhere, what with their "laws" and "standards of academic performance". Any threads on these issues are very on-topic.

Seriously though, the OT tags are nice. Maybe when it gets to the point where people see the entire first page of posts tagged OT they will realize that there is a reason the lounge exists.

I wish the software let you flag threads as OT then you could remove them from the search function. Assuming people use the search function.

can't you just "-OT" in the search field?

edit: no. no you can't. for two reasons:

1. "ot" is only two characters long, which is ignored by the search function.

2. putting a "-" before something doesn't exclude it from search.

The bikeforums.net search function is functionally broken. It's so horrendous that I rather search for posts using google ("site:bikeforums.net" etc.)

Off-topic threads are the heart and soul of SSFG. Without them, SSFG would become just another sub-forum.

I am not comfortable posting in foo. It is a bit to cult like. The "OT" convention seems like a good idea to me.

You guys should be a-scared of the other sub forums. BFSSFG is the roughest, toughest, rootin'est, tootin'est board on this forum. You guys would probably scare them if you showed up.

I like it. Maybe now if someone has something off topic to say, people won't flame them quite so much for putting it on a bike-related forum. I have friends I know solely through biking--doesn't mean I only talk to them about bikes.

Good idea Cynikal had though, to find a way to exclude OT threads from searches. It seems unlikely that such a widely-used forum software would be that edit-able.

OK, now go back here (http://bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=5586671&postcount=13) and correct your post by bolding the first sentence in the text you quoted.
