Any opinions on the pros and cons of the bike trainer versus a self-contained stationary bike? (They've got some nice ones out there nowadays!)

The biggest problem I have with stationary bikes is that many of them use a very heavy flywheel. When you get pedaling fast, this creates a tremendous amount of momentum resulting in an unnatural firing of the quads, and practically no use of the hamstrings. Therefore, I don’t feel like stationary bikes are practical for training purposes. About the only thing they are good for is burning calories.

$350 will buy you a nice trainer. That same money would buy a cheap stationary bike. Plus with a trainer, you get to ride YOUR bike. A trainer also folds away fairly compactly for spring/summer/fall storage.
