I am running a single 42t chain ring up front with a 9spd ultegra long cage der in the back. What is the largest cog cassette I can run?

I tried searching the shimano tech documents but couldn't find anything quickly.

Generally, 30 teeth is about the limit for these medium (GS) cage models. (Actual long (SGS) cage models are marketed as "mountain" derailers. The one that corresponds to Ultegra is the XT.)

Since you're using a single ring, there's a possibility that you might get a 32 to work.

I think that "GS" once meant "Grand Sport" and "SGS" meant "Super Grand Sport."

This all goes back to the era when wide range derailers and clusters were called "touring" parts. In the late '80s, the marketeers decided that "touring" was no longer a good sales buzzword, and all of these parts were re-christened as "mountain" stuff.

This has caused no end of confusion, as ignorant cyclists often imagine compatibility problems that don't actually exist.
