Foo - Why can't I add this network place

As you may be aware I have been fighting with Windows 2000 Pro. I have never networked this OS before and i am having little luck. I was able to add my XP machine (Dimension) to the 2000 machine, but I can't add the 2000 machine (kids) to mine. When i click it (see below) nothing happens.

Any idears?

I'd guess it's a permissions issue. If you create a user on the other machine where the user name and password matches your user name and password on your machine, it'll probably work fine.

It won't let me add another user. (EDIT- I figured this one out. i must check the requires password box. Right now i don't have a password. I am thinking this might be the issue.

I have a folder shared on that computer as it won't let me share the entire drive for some reason. Still i can't even get that folder to show up. There are no firewalls. (that i am aware of)

It also won't let me share the C drive on the 2000 computer. Here is what happens.

:roflmao: Thanks for the offer, but i would probably never read it. I am wondering if the issue is that I haven't set a password. Maybe you have to set a password in able to add it to the network.

Another strange thing is that I can't click on properties of file sharing. SEE BELOW

Never heard that before. I know you can see a 2000 machine on a XP network, but you might need to download a patch to be able to see XP from 2K. Check MS KB.

are you just trying to access the machine or control it? If you are trying to control it, download Logmein at logmein.com the free edition. Works great and it's browser based. I use it to connect to my machine at home from work and to control all my PC's at home. I have Vista, XP and Linux running at home and finding a remote desktop function across all those OS's was sucking. Now it is a piece of cake.

Make sure all the machines are login onto a workgroup, not a domain.

On file file-sharing window above, click on the "New Share" button. You'll get a blank form to fill out the share-name, comments, then set the permissions.

As for users & passwords, yeah, you need an admin password to administers users & groups. Turn ON the "user must enter username and password to use this computer" check box above and assign the Admin account a password. Then you need to create the same set of users and passwords on all the machines.

And there are no "properties" for the "file and sharing for MS networks service". You set those properties in various other locations.

Oddly enough i decided to add my laptop also running Windows 2000 Pro to the workgroup. I then tried to access the other 2000 machine which i can't access from my XP machine. Guess what? Immediately it popped up with a box to enter username and password.

I entered:n administrator for the username and left the password blank and boom, it let me right in. Wonder why XP doesn't prompt me to log in but just sits there indefinitely?

One way around is this to manually map a network drive from the Win2k machine. So you:

1. open a Windows Explorer on the WinXP machine
2. pull down Tools -> MapNetworkDrive
3. in the "Folder:" box, type in the UNC path to the shared folder on the Win2K machine, like "\\Kids\photos" where "photos" is the shared folder you created above by hitting the "new share" button.
4. click on the "connect using a different user name" link
5. type in a username and password that you created on THAT particular machine (Kids).
6. hit OK then Finish and that's it.

So while WinXP won't let you browse an unsecure Win2K machine, you can still map its shared drives and printers if you know the names of the shares and user/passwords you've set up on that particular machine.

Would another way around it, be just to create a password for the user account in 2000?Actually no, upon further review of screenshots above, I see what the real problem is. It's a matter of doing things in order. What you need to do first is create some shared folders on the Kids machine before you can browse and see them. Notice in the 1st screen shot, there's a + next to the Dimension machine but not on the Kids machine? That's because Dimension is sharing some folders and if you click on the +, it'll cascade down a list of shared folders. You want to click on the shared folders themselves to map network drives.

So you are only ONE small step away from doing what you want to do, and you can keep your blank admin password if you want. Just click on "New Share" on your Kids computer and create a shared folder of the C-drive on the Kids computer. After that's done, wait about 1-3 minutes for the MasterBrowser to refresh a list of shared folders and try it again from your XP machine. The Kids computer should now have a + next to it. Open that up and map to that shared folder.


On a related note, here's a neat little MS utility called TweakUI (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui). Version 1.33 works with Win2K, get 2.0 for Xp. What it lets you do is to have an automatic log-on and you can pick which user & password to enter into the log-on window. Give your admin account a password and demote your kid's accounts to user or power-user so they won't get messed up with downloading viruses. Then use the TweakUI to do an automatic log-on of the kid's user account.
