My wife and I rode to the beach in Hilton Head about 11 years ago on a borrowed tandem at her mothers house...I proposed that day (the bicycle built for two thing was just a happy coincidence, I didn't plan it). Anyway, I have had an urge to get an older single speed tandem just for poking around town and maybe pulling a trail-a-bike. It doesn't have to be a '50's schwinn in perfect condition, in fact I would like to do some painting and cleaning just for fun. Any idea where to get such a thing at a reasonable price? Any brands/models to stay away from?

We have an early 70s Blue Schwinn Twinn Deluxe Sport. It has a men's frame for the captain and lady's dropped top tube for the stoker compartment. It has some primer spots on it from adding bottlecage inserts, pump frame mounts and the brakes have been changed over to cantilever. It has a drum brake and I installed five bottlecages on it using the existing mounts and others by using hose clamps. I recently replaced the handlebar tape, gel/spring matching saddles (very comfortable), timing chain and drive chain. It also has front and rear racks with a rear trunk bag.
We rode this tandem for a couple of years and decided that we enjoyed tandeming so much, that we replaced it with a Vision Recumbent Tandem. Partially because we could find an adjustable stoker stem to fit the stoker compartment and my wife was get wrist, hand and back pains. The other "partially" was because I wanted to get indexable shifting since all of my other bikes had it.
If you're interested, please feel free to email me and I'll send you a photo.

I have a 5 sp Schwinn Deluxe Twinn I'll give away free to a good home, but it needs a lot of work, has been outside (but it is complete and ran when parked)....I don't want to ship it, but can deliver (or you pickup) in Northern CA. I'm located about 100 miles north of S.F., but am down to the Bay Area frequently, and can post a photo if anyone is interested

Are you still looking for a used single-speed tandem? I have one I am looking to sell, a compact, 20-inch-wheel European-type model. I bought it with the plan of adding on a trail-a-bike in order to take both my kids to school, then found on ebay the two-seater Adams trail-a-bike I had been looking for (no longer made) that I can add to my single mountain bike, and so am looking to sell the tandem. Check it out on ebay, item #3656072035, if you are interested.
Thanks, I found an old Columbia.
