This has been a weird year-unlike the past several years since Back on the Bike.

Rode like heck from January through June. Dropped 7 more pounds.

Near burnout in July.

Picked up the riding pace again in August for a month to get ready for several centuries.

Since mid September after the Monster rides were over I've just been doing recovery rides looking at the scenery in easier gears for 40-60 miles.

I've greatly incresed the amount I was eating after September and am watching the pounds inch up....1.......2.........3.........4..........5

I assume I'll go through the cycle again early next year and pick the pace back up and lose the weight back off????

It will be interesting to see what the future holds........

You know what they say, "Never assume, because you make an...." ;)

I find that each year trying to jettison the weight I put on over the winter months get a bit harder. This year I'm trying to keep it off and do enough trainer time and other cardio activities to actually keep the weight coming off. There's a little annoying voice in my head that says, "Yeah, good luck with that."

I've worked hard to rid myself of 10 pounds this year and I'll be doing everything possible to keep it off during the winter months.

I'll be setting up the trainer this weekend, dusting off the weights and treadmill for those days I can't get outside to ride. I also plan to take the mountain bike out on those days when it's not practical to take the road bike. I need to look into some type of fender or rack for the mountain bike to keep the slush off my back.

I usually gain a few pounds over the winter months but have found it harder to shed them in the spring as I get older. Now....I don't think you're my age but keep this in mind. Also....men normally have an easier time dropping a few pounds:mad::mad:

Sorry to temporarily hijack this thread, and Beverly, I just can't resist the following:

Yeah, that's probably true. My first wife was easy to lose.

Get yourself a good outdoor winter activity. Exercising in cold weather burns off extra calories just from what it takes to maintain your body heat, or at least that's how it seems to me. I continue to run outside all winter when it's not icy, and cross-country ski when we get enough snow for it.

I dropped a number of pounds last spring, managed to keep it off all summer, and have vowed to stay there through the winter. I haven't been at this weight in over 20 years and I'm starting to get used to it.

Whats a couple of lbs between friends. Due to the extra clothing you'll be wearing- No-One will notice so don't bother too much and even I have noticed a couple of Lbs gain this autumn. Just waiting for the settled winter days to get a couple of decent rides in and they will go.

By the way- Summer has finished here and Fall lasted a few days- Cold Front on the way- torrential rain on the way home tonight and a Flood warning in operation for the South East due to a Northerly wind and High tide and lack of investment for the past ten years.

It's tuff to keep the weight off when you slow down on the bike. Since I have learned to eat the same diet riding or not and just add snacks before, during and after a ride to compensate for the exercise calories then I really don't have to adjust, no riding, no snacks. Watching the scale and making adjustments before it becomes a problem is also important. But one justification to consider - a few extra lbs in the winter will keep you warmer :)

Exercise alone doesn't cause weight loss because exercising makes you hungry. Exercise and better eating does it.

By the way, I recommend Gary Taubes' "Good Calories - Bad Calories." It's an excellent discussion of the science and history of nutrition research. The short version of it is that the low fat, low cholestersol diets we've been conditioned to favor do not affect heart disease. Low sugar and low carb diets are what do it.

I love sugar.........and the more the better. And chocolate......and things that swim!!!

I've worked hard the last few years to shed 50+ pounds and am really enjoying taking a breather. I now know what it takes to lose the extra 5 pounds I was able to do last year and while it's not easy it's very doable. I'm trying to better understand why I lost interest mid year and think it's partly because I was just too regimented. I'm gonna drift back to not pushing on the pedal quite so hard and see how long that lasts. Probably the first ride with my cycling buddies where we continue to ramp up the pace........I'm still lighter than what I was last year and do have an "upper limit" I'll stay under.

I enjoy riding in colder weather so I'm not too worried about continuing to burn some calories. And then there are the Tuesday/Thursday night rides with the racers........
