My Mom needs me to play tech support for a bit, so I may as well combine that with a ride.

I've ridden the first 6 miles or so of this, but not anything after that. Does anyone know how safe these areas are for biking? Looks like it'll be cold and rainy then as well. Thanks!

Neil, did you ever do this ride? You go right past my house. Fresh Ponds road isn't bad - low traffic but no shoulder. I like Davidson's Mill but from the point you hit it at Fresh Ponds to Cranbury, you can get more traffic, though they just lowered the speed limit there from 50mph to 35mph. Cranbury is high traffic, big trucks but necessary evil - it does have a shoulder though. I know I've ridden half-acre where you turn onto it but honestly don't remember.
Basically, from Milltown on, on the weekends not so bad, during the week, more traffic, especially on Cranbury with the trucks. Once you get out passed your mom's though, there's some really good riding.

No, I never did; the weather was very bad the day I had in mind to do this. Want to meet up for a ride?

I've got my bike on the trainer and have been spinning indoors, which is eating up my back tire. One of these days, I'll get over to the drug store to pick up my inhaler so I can ride outside in this weather. Let's touch base mid-February - I'm hoping to get back outdoors around then.

Neil if you need to ride down to Monroe again let me know. Cranbury Rd. is ridable (if you are used to riding in traffic) but there are better selections that are a lot more comfortable to ride on it. I can probably help with a few parts outside of New Brunswick down to Monroe.

Sorry I'm already leading a B ride for Princeton Freewheelers and a B+ for Central Jersey Bike Clubs on Saturday. Sunday I may try to get in another ride with the Freewheelers.
On Day 1, I can't comment on the tow path, I stay off it and use Canal Rd, it's faster (I like fast). I don't recommend Ridge Rd and definitely not Scalks Crossing. Instead When you get off the tow path in Kingston and you've made the left on Rt 27, make the right at the first light (Academy St) instead of the second light (Ridge Rd). Now stay on Academy (name changes to Mapleton the Seminary) this will take you to College Rd W. (light, Princeton Crossing Mall). Make a left and follow College Rd over Rt 1 (careful of the exchanges). At the next light (Scudders Mill Rd) make a left. Climb the overpass (railroad) and make the next right to put you back on your route at Scalks Rd.
First, on Day 2 you are turning onto Rt 130 directly in Cranbury (4.1 miles into the ride). I recommend that you turn left at the traffic light before that onto Main St. Turn at the next Right onto Station (Cranbury Station Rd). The condition of the roadway on Rt 130 is not great.
Second, on Cranbury Station Rd, just after the railroad tracks, there is not roadway there. I recommend you stay on Cranbury Station Rd., through the 4 way stop (on Applegarth Rd), stay left at Union Valley Gravel Hill Rd. and stay straight on Union Valley Half Acre Rd. Then pick up your route at Half Acre Rd. (make a right and left to pick up Half Acre Rd at the lights).
Third, After you start your climb on Helmetta Blvd. Turn left onto Old Stage Rd instead of continuing on Helmetta. Then turn left on Fern Rd (Fire Station - Nut Farm ;-), cross Cranbury Rd (light), zig-zag on Fern, turn right on Dunham's Corner (stop sign), immediate left onto Hardenburg Ln. (light), pick up route in a mile at the blinking light.
PS Is the Historian another Neil, that would make this a 3 - Neils ride. :-)

Thanks! I put in all your suggestions except for the Rt 130 crossing on Day 2; taking main street would be a bit of a pain, since there's no practical way to get to it except taking 130 from the rt 133 bypass. What do you think about taking Mani st to Maplewood, then crossing on Cranbury Half-Acre road? (That's also near my Mom's, which is our first stop for the day.)

I meant that you were to take the light at Old Trenton RD and Main St the turn right on Station (?). Take a look here:

Maplewood to Cranbury Half-Acre is OK, Cranbury Station Rd is better. One thing the odd zig-zag that Google shows at the railroad crossing on Cranbury Station Rd is no longer there. It's now a much nicer railroad crossing with fresh pavement.

I just checked the road today and the sign says Station on Main St. Do watch out for the sink hole in the middle of the crosswalk area. For some reason it's hard to see. Doubt it will cause you to crash it's more of a surprise.
Hope you have a good ride (we got snow/rain today but managed 18 miles).

YES! YES! YES!
We have to do this. Neils on Wheels rules!

Yes he is. Visit his homepage and you can confirm his Neil-status. He even spells it properly - he's not a "Neal."
We gotta ride with him, buddy. Let's make it happen.

We should start a Neil thread. It could be the Bike Forums answer to the "Bruce" Monty Python sketch.

Neil?
Sorry for the late reply, yes I'm a Neil (the proper way to spell Neil). I live on a block with one other Neil (and a Neal). ;-)
Hope no one was out in that snow today, there were accident all over the place. The snow came done and turned to a rain mix and froze instantly. No I wasn't riding.
