Mountain Biking - Best V brakes?

What are the best V breaks?

I like SRAM 9's, but Avid do some nice ones.

How about the Avid Ultimate brakes, but they are around $90 a piece and if you go with the avid ultimate levers also you are looking at around $250 total you could get disc brakes for same cost.

For caliper's, if you want some good working ones without a lot of fuss or fluff, get a set of Deore's. They're inexpensive, lightweight, and work!

As far as levers, go with Avid's!

IMHO Avid makes the best linear pull breaks. SD-5 and above are superior in power and modulation, to most every other linear brake out there.

could i have avid levers with deore caliper's?

I have the Avid SD7 handles with ArchRival calipers and they work great! I'm thinking about upgrading to the Avid Ti brake set to minimize on weight (yes, I'm a weight weenie). I love the feel of the avid handles and their speed dial thing is great for on-the-fly contact adjustment.

Agree with Hunter. No matter what brakes you get, Avid Speed Dials need to be on them. Check eBay for both, you can usually find new ones for a good price.

Avid Speed Dial 5's seems nice. Same as SD7's just you can't see it in action (boo hoo) and a tad heavier. weight doesnt bother me.

I also have Avids sd 7 , works great for me. Got them at price point with levers for only 70 bucks.

I'm running Avid ArchRival 50s with Shimano XTR levers and they work great. I'll definately endorse Avid brakes.

I had a pair of SD7 calipers and levers on my old bike, I loved 'em. I bet you could find a set with levers for around 50 or 60 bucks.

I like my SRAM 9.0 levers.. they're sweet. But I loved my XTR v-brakes and levers, and in fact, still have the levers sitting in my drawer unused.

I like the Avids.

I'm going to have to be the odd one out here.....

I've run XTR brakes and levers with Kool Stop pads for several seasons without trouble. I did install carbon boosters. The stopping power is awesome. I haven't had any squeak/squeeling problems and the levers allow me to dial the system in perfectly for how I like it. Someone I ride with just installed Avid levers with the an adjustment on them (speed dial? - not familiar with Avid's levers) that looked worth trying. I've heard lots of good stuff about the Avid's, but I'm not quite ready to part with the XTR's yet. I'd say you would be safe with either.
