Bicycle Mechanics - thumbshifters?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Do any of you guys know where I cna buy a set of thumbshifters?
thx
Can you be more specific? Try searchin on eBay for those old friction shifters.
Either on eBay or off on a yard sale mountain bike.

You mean those old Suntour Mtb shifters? They're pretty rare if you can find them.....I'd also try Ebay. They're great bomb-proof shifters.....still one of the best around.

I still have the original index/friction SunTours on my 1988 Schwinn mountain bike and have no plans to replace them.

Try your local Salvation Army/Goodwill store for a donated bike. Surprisingly you LBS may have some around and I'm sure you can still order them. If you do order them make sure they are all metal and preferably the Suntours as noted above.
You can still get Shimano thumbshifters off the Tourney line. They're kinda low-quality though and I think they only index to 7 speeds. Another option which is more expensive but yields some very nice shifters is to go with the Forge conversion which makes use of time trial barend shifters and mounts them like traditional thumbshifters.

I used to have a spare set of Shimano 7spd XT thumbies in my garage. I don't recall if I sold them or not. If this is what you are looking for I will dig through my parts and see if I still have them. They are used but certainly have lots of life left in them.
