My family's got a couple of bikes that need new grease, -including the one I'll be riding this winter. I've used a big tub of marine grease forever but I'm wondering if there might be something more suitable for the cold winter temps. What do you think?

I considered this last winter. When temperatures went below 30 deg. F. I could feel extra drag from the grease. I bought a tube of thinner grease for coating parts while assembling an engine, but never got around to repacking bearings with it.

According to Mcmaster Carr, marine grade lithium grease is good for temps of 0 to +325 deg F. You can go with a synthetic lithium grease which suitable for temps of -50 to +400 deg F. If you're really serious you can get some Dow Corning Molykote 33 low temperature grease for temps of -100 to +400 deg F.

The consistency of the Molykote 33 will be the same as the marine grade you are using now. The synthetic lithium will be a little thinner. You can click the link below, or go to www.mcmaster.com (http://www.mcmaster.com) and type in "grease" to see all of the pages.
