I wonder, if cigarette manufactures are taxed to offset the impact to health care smoking makes, is McDonalds also taxed or someway penalized for feeding people unhealthy food?
Me: non smoker and healthy eater, I'm just curious.

Taxed? Hell, they're subsidized! There's no penalty for killing people under the guise of bolstering the economy.

I don't believe restaurants are, but there was some talk of it a few years ago. About the same time McDonalds and others suddenly started adding healthier choices like salads on their menus.

I really don't see the difference between the two industries [in a blind sort of way]. If Phillip Morris gets dinged for pulling the wool so should fast-food CO's. I'm so tired of seeing people eat unhealthy.

Actually, cigarettes tend to kill you off quickly. Being overweight can cause years and years of poor health. I once saw a study (don't ask me to find it) where it was shown that it is a SAVINGS for people to smoke - after all, they usually don't end up on medicaid.
Being overweight is much more costly.
For example, high risks sports should be encouraged, and perhaps subsidized, if you are merely looking from the point of view of medical savings.
just being contrary today just for fun.

I've never heard of someone going through withdrawals from lack of fast food (though I'm sure it's happened :p).

Ive heard this is an argument that the cigarette industry makes to countries with socialized medicine when they try to make business difficult for them.
