Foo - I love my SUV

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It gets driven safely. It runs cleaner than a lot of cars. It's big, yes, but that space is nessecary. It's four wheel drive. It's not a Hummer, but the H3 was considered. It's V8 powered. When it pulls in the driveway covered in mud with water dripping from the wheelwells, we hose it off and go out to dinner in a nice-looking, comfortable vehicle. What the hell kinda bike is that useful?

Mine was purchased only because I needed the room to carry my two greyhounds around (didn't work so well in my car). If not for that, I'd still be in a (paid for) car. :(
i poked a small hole in the gas tank of mine cuz the mileage was too good.
i use it to hit things and deprive others of their rights.

You can do the same thing with a smaller SUV. . you know that right? Get a truck if you need space, a suv is a van with a bigger engine and less usefulness.

crankshaft uses his SUV to go trolling, how exciting!
But will you still love it if gas reaches $5 per gallon?
Even $5/gal is only 75-80 % of what it costs here. I wouldn't mind seeing the price doubled over here. To begin with. Might get a few more cars off the streets.

Pffft. By the time gas is $5/gal U.S., it'll be a buck ninety-nine Canadian.

i could poke a hole in the gas tank of Tercel and hit things with it too, but you have to hit them several times to get the same amount of damage and the Tercel restricts peoples rights, but does not actually deprive them of their rights. i am gonna stick with my ginormous suv, thanks.
I use it to drive around my friends.Your friends must be huge if you need an automobile to drive around them!

......a suv is a van with a bigger engine and more usefulness.
There - fixed.
I've had vans, mini-vans, traditional station wagons, and SUV's. SUV's are FAR more useful across a broad range of applications than any of the others - especially if you have an active family, a dog or two, and all the gear that goes along with it.

Last van was basically good for nothing, FWD with a crappy six and ugly as anything. Ours is actually a pretty small SUV, and gets better mileage than the van. The Jeep pulls a trailer, hauls dogs, pulls up hills with confidence, and it's worth having for what we use it for.

I use my SUV to run over endangered species.
I use mine so when I get into a wreck with a normal car, they die and I win.
I use mine so when I get into a wreck with a normal car, they die and I win.So why waste your time with an SUV? Someone's just going to buy the next bigger model and kill you dead. Get the real thing.

Mann that's cool. Iwantit.
I don't hardly know anyone that doesn't own an SUV, myself excluded. I say, if you love it and enjoy wasting extra money on poor gas mileage and 4 wheel drive you will never use, then go for it.
Why not:

You can make a case for anything, and of course some people have a lifestyle that suits an SUV. Still, their shortcomings are well established. These may overlap because they come from differnt perspectives:
For you and your loved ones: They cost more. They use more gas. They take longer to stop. They can't swerve very well to avoid a collision. They roll more easily. They implode more easily. Their roofs collapse more in a rollover. Their cargo space is overrated. Their carrying capacity is underutilized. Most of the time the driver rides alone on pavement and gets little value from the thousands of extra dollars invested. They're hard to park and need more space. They're dangerous to back up. They can't always get through a bottleneck.
For other drivers: They take longer to stop. They can't swerve very well to avoid us in a collision and they crush us if they hit us. They cause traffic jams when they can't get through a bottleneck. They obstruct our view of the road. They congest the freeways because they need more space around them in rush hour, due to both their poor braking and the fact other drivers can't follow as close because they can't see traffic conditions ahead when they're behind them. They take up too much parking space. They block the road and/or sidewalk when parked. They impede our view of pedestrians and cyclists.
For cyclists (and pedestrians): They are more lethal when they hit us. They obscure us from other vehicles. They fill more of the lane and crowd us. They are dangerous backing up
For society in general: They cause more road wear and tear. They spew more pollution than a similarly maintained sedan. Some people use them irresponsibly to tear up the landscape.
For 15 year olds: you can't drive ha ha.
etc. etc. ad nauseaum
