I've often wondered what the ladder of best to worst(?) Shimano components would look like.
For road stuff it would seem as far as price goes:
1.Dura Ace
2.Ultegra
Then what?

And for off road components
1.XTR
2.XT

Where does stuff like 105,Deore,Exage,Alivio,R600,LX,Tiagra,Sora,RSX,Nexave,Nexus,Saint ,and others fit??

Then Deore is used at least 3 different ways.
I have seen Deore XT, Deore LX and simply Deore branded items? What's the deal with that??

That has most of the hierarchy listed.
But a good rule of thumb is hierarchy corresponds to price.

I don't want to hijack, but is there any similar list that also list past groups (Exage, 300ex, 600 etc etc)? That would be cool to see. New and Vintage Campy Hierarchy lists would be awesome too.

Next down the line is 105, which should be the most bang for the buck.
Tiagra is about the bottom.

I'm not sure about the Deore ranking, but I had a failed shifter (105 I think) replaced with a Deore. I liked the Deore somewhat better.

But compared to what?

For example, the 600 name was changed to Ultegra at some point but, given the choice, I'd take 105 or maybe even Tiagra over 600 today.

Sora is below Tiagra. I just bought a bike with new Tiagra components and I think they are much better than the Sora components. But the Tiagra isn't as nice as my two year old 105 shifters.

Naturally it would have to be by era. Like a 70's hierarchy, an 80's hierarchy etc..

I would personally take 600 over Tiagra any day. 600 was really good stuff. I might do new 105 over 600 though.
