Foo - Gif Thread:

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Either one.
As a forum user, I don't care. I never viewed the original thread until it was brought up by some other moderators. But the original thread was an unmoderatable mess with plenty of potentially NSFW images sprinkled throughout. You are welcome to discuss the merits of a GIF thread, but seeing as the new thread didn't get off to any better a start in this regard, for the time being, this line of posting is closed.

The thread was open for 5 hours. It hadn't even left the front page.
it was fun while it lasted but I wouldn't fall on my sword over it, let it rest and start another one in a month or two when things have cooled down. you never know, someone might even have a change of heart about it and resurrect the old one if you're nice and don't get too pushy about it

That's true, Randya. Something like that happened to the picture thread and it came back after a while. :)

You are only one person. Surely it crossed your mind that your opinion might not be reflective of the community?
I never viewed the original thread until it was brought up by some other moderators. But the original thread was an unmoderatable mess with plenty of potentially NSFW images sprinkled throughout.
At the end of the day who's fault is that? More to the point how many complaints were registered by the community regarding the content of the thread. How many? Honestly.
You are welcome to discuss the merits of a GIF thread,
We will.

With such overpowering logic, rationality and common sense how can any of us disagree. It all makes perfect sense now.

makes it harder to go see where exactly the NSFW images were. ( I was about to, since it was only locked a few minutes ago)
and also, if someone doesnt explain to you what the problem is with your thread, guess it makes it harder to correct those problems when you opened your second thread if you were not notified of what the problem was to begin with.

Somebody felt like Bruce Almightying the original Gif thread. The same fate awaited the second GIF thread that I dumped a ton of time into creating.
All of this with nary a mention of why... until now.

they may not be viewable, but they are still around somewhere, nothing ever gets deleted completely. The Word Association thread and some other game threads were resurrected in their entirety after Koffee Brown deleted them during her final meltdown.

Ditto, man.
I attempted to view the new gif thread, a single page tool several minutes to load on a DSL connection, with the majority of the posts by Cypress. I have to agree with jschen and the rest of the moderators who discussed the closer of the thread that it was needed. As jschen stated, it had become unmoderatable, and basically to the point of unviewable for many. It is the moderators job to maintain the quality of the forum and the threads within it. It's never an easy decision to remove a long standing thread from a forum like Foo because of the life of their own that they take on, and the members who are impacted when it does have to be done. However know that it is never a personal thing against any one member who started, contributed, or otherwise was a part of the thread.

well, i didnt look at it cause it really didnt hold any interest for me. teh other reason was i felt i might get a picture which wasnt appropriate to be seen at work...anyways, i dont really care one way or the other..
a single page tool several minutes to load on a DSL connectionIt took a long-ass time to load (especially if you're set to 30 posts per page), but it was totally worth it. Just open it in a new tab, and read some other threads for a bit. No biggie.
I honestly don't recall seeing anything that I'd consider NSFW (though there were probably some you might not have wanted to set as your wallpaper at work), but I understand that my standards for such things are different than others.
Mark me down as a vote in favor of it returning in some fashion. I really liked it. It brought me countless laughs.

Man I don't miss this crap. Its closed, suck it up, ciao. Why do people dwell on dumb stuff, it was closed and I am sure the mods had their reasons, they run the site based on the rules layed out by the owner, if the owners don't like the way the mods do stuff they will deal with it. Think of the mods as mere supervisors. If you have a problem, goto the foreman (the admins) if life still sucks go to the owner, but keep in mind, the owner might be busy with important **** and ignore the uselessness of a simple rant that holds very little merrit.

That's it?
If you had of run a legitimate 'look we just had too many complaints from members about content in that thread' then FAIR CALL.
If you had of run a legitimate 'look it was just messing with server load times or something' then FAIR CALL.
But deleting the thread purely because you couldnt be bothered to wait for the gifs to load to see if you needed to tidy it up is quite pathetic really.
Talk about obfuscation of duty. It was your job to maintain a fair degree of moderation over the life of the thread. To just come along and say 'oh well we never looked at it and now we cant be bothered going through it so hey lets just delete it cos none of us really care about it'.
How many complaints did you have about content in the thread? How many?

Every forum needs a gif thread!
How about a gentleman's agreement to limit the gifs to 1 per post?
That would eliminate the downloading time problems but still allow for unlimited gifs.
As for NSFW, this forum is one of the better I've seen when it comes to the members acting like adults about that, otherwise you're all children!
Also, the mods are pretty quick on that stuff.
So, best thing ever meh.

For a brief minute, I remembered being an admin. It had a lot of ups (I really enjoyed it as a whole), threads like this just remind me of the crap I had to put up with almost constantly haha
i don't understand why the entire thread was dumped, as opposed to only removing the allegedly offending gifs.

I didn't look in the thread. Was the problem the content of the pictures? Was it the affect that all the memory use in the thread had on the servers? Was it both? Was it something else?
If the problem was that it was bogging the servers down, having to delete the thread makes perfect sense to me.

Won't stop me from visiting...just reduces the number of threads I really enjoyed visiting from time to time.
The .GIF thread was deleted?! ****!
That was my favorite thread, almost every one of those gave me a chuckle if not a laugh. How was it unmoderable - I'd routinely go through the old pages without an issue. I have better things to do to wait for one page so I'd do other things while it was loading, but that's the nature of the interwebs - I rarely click on a page and wait for it.

Because no one could actually do that. I just plain can't. GIFs tend to give me headache and nausea, and I literally almost lost my breakfast the last time I tried to even look at that thread. Cleaning up GIFs is a glacially slow process, and most other mods just don't have the time for that. Of the moderators who did have the time to clean it up, it would crash their browsers or some other software on their computers.

1. Why did it need 'cleaning up'? (Still not answered)
2. How many direct complaints did moderators receive about the content? (Still not answered)
3. Why make work for yourselves when clearly there was none?
4. Unless there was 'outrage' from members about its content why did you take any action at all?
Feel free to answer of these questions with either a) FACTS or b) some other form a rational reasoning as to why it no longer deserves to exist.
Its pretty interesting that as 'moderators' you run around deleting threads willy nilly (an EXTREME action might I add).
It also reflects on the level (or lack there of) respect you appear to have for your fellow forum members (you know the plain ordinary members who contribute). If a thread has abusive, disrespectful or disgusting content then ofcourse act autonomously. However if you are simply deleting threads for no other reason than 'well we really dont like it' then at least engage the community on whether it should stay or go.
Allow Cypress to restart a new 'gif thread' and set some clear guidelines on how you want it to run (i.e clean content and only one gif per post - which is a good idea).

Because.
Perhaps by your next birthday, you'll be old enough to accept that when a grownup does something that may seem unpopular, they usually have a good reason. Seriously though, too many users don't know what's not appropriate, and the GIF threads are hellish to moderate. You'll need to accept the fact that the threads are gone, and whining isn't going to bring them back.
If you went to a good friend's house for a dinner party, and they didn't have your beverage of choice, would you complain continuously, or just let it go and have a good time with your friends?
If anyone would like to discuss this privately, feel free to email me.

what's funny to me is that the gif threads were fun & clean, meanwhile a mod posts right below a very offensive gif in this thread, the likes of which were not in either of cypress' threads (that i saw, at least).
