BMX - why are bmx drive trains so expensive?

I have an internal gear hub on my bike and I was thinking of using a BMX crankset, but I noticed that they are significantly more expensive than regular cranksets.

What's the deal? Any good affordable BMX cranksets out there?

I recently converted my BMX bike into a three speed. I was able to find a Stumey Archer hub at a good price.
I kept the crankset the same.
But what I wanted to say is, the BMX crankset does NOT have the usual square taper bottom bracket.
It has a Splined bottom bracket.
So you would be looking at replacing the BB , too?

Yeah, but are they as tough to wear as they are to impact? I don't want to spend $100 on a chainwheel if I'm going to need to replace it every year (as I would with a regular chainwheel).

Well, I don't know. I'm looking to replace the whole front of my drivetrain ("singlespeed").

I need a chainring around 30-38T and I'm looking for weather resistance, so I guess I'll need a sealed bottom bracket. Durability (in terms of impact resistance and wear...and I'm not talking about pedaling around the skate park, but thousands of miles) are a priority as is a full bashguard.

Price might not be that much of an issue if it weren't for the fact that I really don't want to waste money on something I won't be happy with.

Can you recommend anything?

Because nobody makes chainrings and bashguards specifically designed for folding bikes.

Why wouldn't I?

Most people encase the entire bike in a giant hard suitcase. However, that seems rather silly to me when really the only part that isn't at least as bash-proof as the suitcase itself is the chainring.

I mean, what would you rather attach to your bike? The biggest, heaviest suitcase you can get your hands on or the toughest bashguard you can get your hands on?

I would just get a bike that doesn't fold into a rectangle, personally.

Well, unfortunately, that isn't always possible; Due to either space limitations or rules.

So, you're looking for a guard-type sprocket then? You might take a look at the Odyssey MDS, it's got a protective guard on one side, and you can buy another guard to screw on the other side for extra protection if you need it. The biggest is a 30t, and it's made out of 7075 aluminium.

BMX drive trains are not any more expensive than any other area. If you look at sugino 75's, Race Face, etc. they are well over $200. The thing is, you get what you pay for.

I run a chrome set of profiles with a titanium spindle and bolts with magnesium pedals on my 29er. They will never, EVER break. (Plus I got them second hand dirt cheap) way cheaper than I could have gotten a nice set of single speed travativ cranks.

Bmx and MTB's put different stress on the components. There is a lot less lateral stress on a MTB because you're not doing spins or anything that will land the bike sideways and bend the spindle. On any bike but a BMX bike, profiles are bombproof. Sacrifices can be made in strength area's like adding the ti/magnesium parts. God PROBABLY won't break my cranks.
