Mountain Biking - Fork Length

This might sound really dumb but I wasn't sure....

Is a 125mm fork longer in length then a 80mm fork (not including steerer tube)

Yes by 45mm...if you are thinking of upgrading your fork from 80 to 125 be warned it will change your geometry signifigantly and put odd stresses on your headtube it may not be built for. I would consult (email) your manufacturer before doing a fork upgrade that signifigant.

BTW it is measuring travel of the fork - not actual length

Actually its measuring actual length. since i noticed up to 10mm of difference between 100mm forks of different manufacturers. But mael is right. consult your manufacturer and keep his email as warranty proof if he agrees to the change.

Actual length varies a fair bit , but with such an increase in travel physical length is bound to be longer. Sag will effect riding length as well. If you're worried about retaining your warranty get your replacement fork approved by the frame manufacturer or at least an approved dealer or someone prepared to cover potential frame replacement if it goes horribly wrong...

2003 Rockhoppers are warrantied for 5" inch forks. Check with specialized.

One thing I don't understand is that if you have a fork that can change from 80-125 and you keep it at 80mm will that change overall handling becasue the length of the fork is longer due to the fact it can change to 125mm

No, because shortening the travel to only 80 will affectively shorten the total length of the fork.
