Cyclocross - versatile CX bike...???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

so...i'm still shopping for a cyclocross bike. i originally asked if i could use my roadbike for cyclocross...but i guess that wasn't really recommended. but i have another question...is there a bike that i can use for mountain biking AND cyclocross?
Any cross bike can be used on mountain bike trails, just not as well as a mountain bike.
The cross check isn't a fabulous racer, but it will take pretty huge tires, so it might make a decent mountain bike substitute.
I take my cross bike on some pretty gnarly tails, but with the exception of fireroads and the like I'd be a lot faster on a cross country mountain bike.

You could get a 29er mountain bike and run cross wheels/tires on it for cross, then mtb tires for mountain biking... It's not the perfect solution, but I would say that a light 29er rigid would be better for cross than a cross bike would be for mountain biking.

can you recommend any decent 29ers that aren't too expensive? road and tri are my real loves in cycling...so i don't want to spend more than $1000 on a mtb/cx bike, used or new.

You could probably build up a surly karate monkey for that price. YOu wouldn't get super components unles syou really shop around. But if you run shallow flared dirt drops it could be a very servicable 'cross bike and cross country rig.
