Touring - Newark - Jersey City - Manhattan

Does anyone know a bikeable way to get to Jersey City? I'll be coming from the south from the end of this route (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Tour-day-3-final).

My plan is to take the ferry (or the PATH train) into Manhattan from there. I wish I could go in through Staten Island, but the Outerbridge is closed to bikes and foot traffic. Thanks!

The only "bikeable" route is to go up to the GWB. Otherwise, you have to take a train or ferry.

Biking up to New Brunswick and taking the NE Extension Rail line may be the best option. I've never tried to bike closer to NYC, but I'd imagine it would be a pretty hairy experience.

If you're looking for a route though, I'm sure some folks on crazyguyonabike have done it.

I went from Manhattan to Staten Island,(Took the ferry) across Staten Island and then took the Bayone Bridge to NJ on my ride from Boston to Fla....Was it legal to ride on the Bayone bridge? I donno,I just did! no one tryed to stop me

Well... for JC there isn't exactly a "best option." ;) To get to JC, you transfer in Secaucus or stop in Newark and take the PATH.

The major issue is that there is no way to cross the Hackensack River by bike, it's all highways. So you can't get to SI, Bayonne, JC, Hoboken etc directly. You'd have to get up to Bergen County, cut across Fort Lee (near the GWB), then ride southwest along the river. So just getting to JC from, say, Elizabeth will add an extra 30 miles to what, by car, would be a 12-mile trip.


The Figment: You're supposed to walk your bike on the pedestrain path of the Bayonne bridge.

I think I'll save this for a future trip, maybe where I start in NYC and head north. Thanks!
