I own a 99 Cannondale F500. The suspension fork is just basically a spring. I played with a Cannondale Bad Boy yesterday and was amazed how much better the suspension was. Plus, the lock out is cool.
Can I swap in a newer suspension fork with headshock? Or is it just a stupid waste of money?

Probably not, as Headshock uses a almost proprietary 1 1/4" headtube. "Normal" suspension forks use a smaller 1 1/8" headtube.

You need an adapter bushing tha reduces the diameter . This is done frequently and I have seen the kits sold in bikeshops and the net.
here is one reference

a 99 f500 should have come with the p-bone headshock. you can upgrade to a newer headshock with no problem except for needing to go to disc brakes as most all headshocks now are disc brake only. If you are the original owner of the bike and have reciepts you cannindale does and upgrade option which will saave you some money on the fork. headshocks run about 500 dollars new
