It also helps if you wear the correct size shorts, the ones about are probably a size or two too small. You can see through almost any material if stretched too much.

I don't really have problems with mine, the guys I ride with would say something for sure. In fact, They'd probably have pictures like that all over the internet in seconds.

I've seen what ME is talking about. It happens sometimes to some people. I won't say who, but I've seen it too on BF group rides... I really didn't mind. Made the rides more interesting. LOL

I have a pair of the ultras and I have to agree, they are thin compared to the gel lite shorts. However, I do not have the issue of the "see through-ness". It depends on how much of it's stretched. :D

Mary,

Good call. I made the same observation some months back in the "Shopping" thread. The more recent Ultras are made of a funky, large weave fabric. It is significantly stretchier, and more transparent, than ordinary lycra fabric. I saw right away that they were see-through. The Elites on down in the Performance line seem to use heavier, normal lycra material, and don't have this problem. That said, Performance is always changing their fabrics, etc., so not all Ultras may have that issue. But, folks, don't be reflexively defensive about it. Just check it out. There is a razor thin line between bike shorts and the "emperor wears no clothes".

You make another great point too: there is hardly a one among us that has seen our own butt from behind, where fabric "stretchage" is greatest. It would be a good idea for all of us (me included) to mount the bike on the trainer, and let his/her SO check out the view from behind.

Why, thank you, Paul! :) They all just think I'm gutter-smut-minded-dirt-bag-lech-ho and am imagining these "things." But trust me...I'm not.

Oh, and I agree - not ALL Performance shorts are see-through, but you can bet your exposed butt-crack, most Ultra's are. :D

If all this is true, you're all still making a big fuss over nothing. I have three points to make:

1. Who cares?
2. To the extent that anyone actually cares, it just means I can be excused from pulling in front and just wheel suck off the back.
3. I don't have to look at myself anyway.

So really there's no downside.

I'm thinking those wearing them don't really care so why should I. One of the first things I do when shopping for shorts is to stretch the hiney to see how much will be left to the imagination. Not to mention, riding with someone that has more junk in the trunk than most, one must be very careful when it comes to choice of shorts.

Gina wears shorts made by Terry. They are thick, supportive and very comfortable. She's worn PI, Nike, Performance and find the Terry to be by far the best for her needs. About $80 a pair.

BTW, I once ended up behind a really fit looking chick with the see thru condition. Eventhough she was a nice looking gal, I found it just as gross as if it were a hairy cracked old fart. I had to pull out!

Let's keep in mind from which era Indolent comes. I don't think he's worried about his lycra being a little too sheer.

No - a bit before my time. I was 11 when Woodstock happened. I'm not a hippy, I'm just insensitive to the feelings of others, which is actually more of an 80's thing if you think about it.

Oh, I get it. You're kind of like Madonna, post Borderline's release and video, pre-Sean Penn, right around the whole Desperately Seeking Susan phase. Let me guess, you'll dry your armpits with the hand blower in a public restroom too, huh?

Anyway, my Performance shorts from last year are plenty thick. The waist is kinda low, however, so I have to wear my longest jersey to avoid butt cleavage.

The ultras are performance's top of the line shorts/bibs and they are see through under certain lighting conditions. Harsh sun-light seems to be fine but if you get an overcast day with indirect lighting they can become translucent if stretched enough...

If you're on someone's wheel that's a view that may cause you to lock up your brakes in disgust or to run into them from trying to get a closer look... ;)

Okay, some of you may not care, but it was brought to my attention recently that my Performance brand bike shorts and the new Performance brand pair of capris that I was wearing yesterday (which were very comfy, might I add) are see through. REALLY transparent...all in display...them dimples on my ass never looked more 3D. Got it?

Now, being female and given that the chamois covers more so on me, my exposure is limited to the buttage. Not so for you boys. Thing is, I noticed (without providing names) that several men on here on several different rides over the last year who wear those shorts are suffering the same fate as I am. You can see "everything," guys. Not that I'm trying to check out anyone's package or junk in yo' trunk, and normally "blurries" on the married butts keep my eyes averted, but I can't help it if the sun shines just right and the "top tubes" are visible. And don't get me started on who has a mole where, okay?

I'm throwing my Performance brand shorts/tights/capris away and investing in more decent cycling attire. You guys do as you will. But you've been aptly warned. :o

OK - which one of you knuckleheads spoiled everything and told her? :D

+1! On my club ride recently, a young woman developed a tear in her shorts, right on the buttcheek. We formed a paceline behind her and I don't even like paceline riding. At the lunch stop one of the guys told her about it, and she used a bandana to cover up.

We took him aside to convince him of his error. I hear they're discharging him from the hospital tomorrow.

I'll have you know that when Ovo tore his shorts, I raised money to replace them so he wouldn't show the world his business. Of course, I haven't seen him since and therefore still have the money so his business may be on view as I type this, but there is simply nothing I can do about that.
