General Cycling Discussion - Pictures from the Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I went to the Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show today and had a great time. There were lovely, dream bikes of all varieties and it was interesting to meet the builders. So here are some pictures. Caveat: I'm not a very good photographer and it also didn't help that the place was packed with people. I know there will be far better pictures on BikePortland (http://bikeportland.org/index.php) in the next day or so, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy these. I tried to get a variety of bikes - not just the ones I love the most.

I'm sure it will come as no surprise to any of you who know me that I took lots of pitcures of bikes made for city/utility riding. :D I think my two favorite were Joseph Ahearne and Tony Pereira. They're doing some fantastic work.

Joseph Ahearne (http://www.ahearnecycles.com/) makes beautiful yet practical racks with slots for one's U-lock. He's also working on a bike with a Rohloff hub.

Tony Pereira (http://www.pereiracycles.com/) built this sweet little mixte with the Shimano Alfine hub and disc brakes. What a fantastic bike for wet Oregon winters.

There were lots of mountain bikes. I tried to take pictures of the ones that seemed especially beautiful to me. Whether or not they do what you need them to do, I could not say.

Daedalus Custom Bamboo Bikes (http://daedaluscycles.com/) was there and had 2 beauties to show. The lugs are wrapped carbon. The builder says the weight is similar to titanium frames. I was amazed.

Even though I don't ride road bikes, I spent a while at the Sweetpea Bicycles (http://sweetpeabicycles.com/) booth. Natalie Ramsland builds them and her husband Austin spent a lot of time telling me all about them and the need for more WSD bikes. Austin told me this story about how his mother nearly threw an ill-fitting bike through a shop window in disgust. It seemed like this really stuck in his head and certainly explains his passion for WSD.

These are S&S couplers so you can dismantle your bike for easier transport. Apparently, S&S is a maker of medical machinery and they produce these couplers just for the fun of it.

Austin encouraged me to get pictures of this frame, as he feels the lugs and the wishbone seatstay are really special.

This last Sweetpea has something of a romantic story attached to it. Natalie built this bike for a woman who is now married to bike fitter Michael Sylvester who founded the Serotta Fit Program. Michael has taught Natalie about bike fitting for her builds and he has done fittings for many Sweetpea owners, including owner of this particular bike. It must have been a memorable fitting because it resulted in their marriage a year later.

One of the nicest things about the show was that a place was made for our local builders of Alt bikes. There were some really interesting bikes shown by the Zoobombers and the Dropout Bicycle Club. I started a thread in Alt Bikes, if you're interested in those pictures. (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=5616640)

Nice pics but one thing I don't understand. You want to attract the judges to your bike so you tape a pumpkin and an old rusty can to the bike rack (picture 2)???

Thanks Donna. Awesome pics.

I have a friend who owns a Land Shark. Awesome bike and paint scheme.

I recently saw a write-up (in Bicycling??) about bamboo bikes. What did you think of the ones you saw? I'm really intrigued by the idea. Did they say anything about a limit on the rider's weight?

I think that "rusty can" was a U lock.

Donna, thank you for sharing the pics!! I had for a short time considered a SweetPea but I really had never heard too much of them so I got a little hesitant and backed out.

I missed the show they had here last year. My nephew had come over from Colorado to visit and we were planning on going but I couldn't get the day off. Maybe next time.

Hey it is! :) OK then what is with the pumpkin and the rusty ulock? The kitty on the front rack???

I noticed another pic of a bicycle with an old rusty ulock. What's the deal???

The Ramslands are really great people, and Natalie has been learning bike fitting from Michael Sylvester himself. I think her bikes are definitely something to keep an eye on. They're great now, but she's only going to get better with time.

If you learn your nephew is coming to Portland this February, let me know. It would be fun to meet him. :)

I didn't ask, but here's their website (http://daedaluscycles.com/).

Here's a fantastic article about the show (http://bikeportland.org/2007/11/12/builders-crowds-impress-at-handmade-bicycle-show/) that might answer some more technical questions people may have. There are profiles of some of the newer and less-known builders.

I am all about that U-lock holding rack, clever idea. Can it still hold a pannier on that side?

CB HI
11-14-07, 05:26 PM
Based on photo #2 (yellow rack), no problem with pannier and U-lock. Plus the rack extends its lower rail; which would give the pannier better support to the rack than the mass produced products do.

Edit: The silver rack does not look like it would hold a pannier on the U-lock side.

Looks like it would cost about $400, may have to go with only one rack out of this years bike fund.
But I have 2 bikes telling me they each need the custom rack.
