Road Cycling - Winter Training

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm just getting my road bike and live in Alaska, so needless to say I'll be traing indoors on a magnetic trainer a lot this winter.
I was wondering what the best way to start my "career" this winter would be?
Thanks,
Chris:thumbup:

Good luck with your training, Threeflys! I guess with you on board here at BikeForums, none of the rest of us will ever feel the same complaining about our weather! :o
Others are better qualified to respond to your questions; I just wanted to say welcome.

Thanks Rainman, as for why I can't ride here the winter: ICE
The roads here get really Icy, they get about 1/4" of ice and it stays all winter. People here drive with metal studs on their tires.
Luckily, I have only 1 more winter here and then it's off to Northern CA (I hope, I'm in the Coast Guard so who really knows!)

The problem down south in Montreal [love the sound of that] isn't ice so much as ice as it is slush and salt. The city cleears the streets with huge truckloads of rock salt, turning the ice and snow intoa truly disgusting salty slurry. Tires rot, chainrings and chains corrode -- I don't even want to think about what it does to frames. So I'm with you on the winter layoff.
I usually do a lot more jogging in the winter, and I think I'll get a three-month membership at the local gym. It's not the same, but I'm gping to need the workout to keep in shape until spring. Cross country skiing and hockey are always fun, but they're not quite as convenient as cycling and I never get to do either more than once or twice a week.
