In one of those weird microclimate scenarios, there wasn't a hint of wind between Santa Monica and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The ocean near the marina was so flat is was glassy. Looking just a few miles into the Santa Monica mountains was another story altogether, esp before 9am.

Wind schmind ... we're wimps!
Yes you are!
It was windy for another 2 miles and then it died. The weather actually was perfect (55-65) and we took it easy. I was in the front group ; well, Cleave took off way a head of us; so I stoped and took a phot of each and every one as he/she climb. I will upload photos later. The amazing thing is that I looked at my cyclecomputer and it show max speed of 52 point something so I assume somewhere in the way down we enjoy a 40+mph wind push...

Santa Ana winds typically are land bound and tend to die out very quickly once reaching the ocean. I've had the experience of sailing out of Marina Del Rey with winds at my back only to hit a headwind a mile offshore.

It was a great ride. The winds were a little bit strong, but like the others said they died out near the top. Great food at the lodge and a nice trip down, though a little scary because of the wind, definitely a little scary coming down at 50 and having the wind blow you over a few feet. Coming back though we had a nice little paceline going. Then we got to the part of the road that was pretty bad and that broke it up a little. It was like a miny paris-roubaix over the cobbles. But all in all a good day.
