Classic & Vintage - 83 Peugeot BB threading

I have a 83' Peugeot, would the cup on the BB be standard thread direction or still French threading direction? Thanks

Good question. In the early 80s Peugeot briefly switched over to Swiss threads and then finally introduced BSA (standard British) threads on the BB's of most of their export bikes. In a 1986 catalog Peugeot still made a big point of mentioning that they were now [finally] using BSA threading. My guess would be that you could safely assume a 1983 bike has either Swiss or British threads - either of which will have Fixed (right side) cups which LOOSEN by turning CLOCKWISE.

Correct.

Swiss cups may be either gold in color, similar to anodizing, or they may have a ring around the outermost circumference of the cup. Crankset brand is not indicative of it being Swiss or British. My 1982 PH12 with a SR crank from the factory has Swiss threads.

Someone please correct me if you have conflicting data, but my experience indicates that 1980 through 1982 Peugeots have Swiss threading. I know this was the case with my PKN-10 and with two UO-8 / Carbolite 103 successors from the early 1980s.

John that seems about right. I dont think its possible to say exactly when the change from from French to Swiss and Swiss to British took place.

it's a guess, but I would say metric until early 1980's then change to imperial.

The whole range was revamped in 1981 so it could have changed then,

I have 1978 UK lit with metric & imperial
I have 1981 UK lit with only imperial

I have 1980 French lit with metric.

In the 1970's there was only France, Spain and Switzerland that used metric tubes. All others used imperial as today, but refer to it as metric measure, ie 1" = 25.4 etc

These 3 all changed to imperial as the supply on metric lugs dried up. (pre TIG welded frames)
