Bicycle Mechanics - Strange sound with my crankset

Hey all, just recently i've been hearing a strange sound coming from my crankset. Every time i peddle there is a noise that sounds like the breaks are scraping against the wheel. However, i have checked out the breaks and they are not hitting the wheel at all. The sound doesn't happen all the time, only when i'm peddling hard, if i don't push too hard on the peddles however, the sound usually disappears. i repacked my bearings to to see if that was the problem, but it didn't help. None of the balls are chipped and their are no strange grooves or scratches on the races. Everything seems to be in perfect order. . . i'm stumped.

The sound is driving me insane.

OP...check to make sure it's not chain rub. If you have a flexible frame or massive guads, you can twist the BB during the pedal stroke to the point where you rub the chain against the front derailleur because your chainline is off where it should be.

Also...make sure it's not coming from your pedals or cleats.

On my MTB I thought I had a BB problem until I discovered my shoelace tips hitting my crank on each stroke.

yep, i was taught creative spelling in school . . . haha, thanks for the bike help vpiuva, i shall never spell improperly again, however . . . there is still a strange sound coming from my bike . . . too bad spelling doesn't help her much.

Thanks for your help guys, i'm thinking that i should check out my spokes (gracias a Bill) and make sure that they are at a proper tension.
