Great Lakes - 2nd Annual BFNIC Spring Classic Ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

As being the "host" for the BFNIC Spring Classic, I contemplating a different route this coming up year. For those who weren't apart of the 1st Annual BFNIC Spring Classic, you can read about it here: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=278382

So why not a poll?

Option 1 is using the same Crystal Lake route as last time. 2, 30-mile loops on country roads with the option of Bull Valley hills at the end of loop 2. I guess the order and direction of the loops could be changed but that is not important now. The cue sheet and maps can be seen here:
http://www.h3odesign.com/Cue_Sheets.pdf

Option 2 is moving the ride across the Cheddar Curtain (get your passports fellow Fibs) to New Glarus. Two reasons to do this; 1 - a change of scenery is nice, 2 - we would start and finish in the parking lot of the New Glarus Brewing Company :D http://www.newglarusbrewing.com/ . Again, it would be 2, 30-mile loops on country roads. I have mapped these but they are subject to change. I generally know the roads in the area but I would ride them before finalizing the routes. The loops can be seen here:
http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/wi/new-glarus/813443411
http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/wi/new-glarus/1194179888

For those who don't know, New Glaurus is south central Wisconsin and is located here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+Glarus,+WI,+United+States+of+America&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title

So the way I see it, Crystal Lake is closer but New Glarus is a better ride and has a brewery tour at the end of the ride.

So will the dates be similar?

I have family-inlaws that live in New Glarus. The brewery is great and there are real hills.

It's pitch dark at 5:30 pm already. Anything to motivate through the darkness of the next few months is welcome.

We've got iab's Spring Classic and the early Fall Psimet Invitational. I'm thinking there just might be a mid-Summer CyLowe Pro-Am Century. Hmmm..... time to start thinking of location ideas. Time to google Breweries of the Great Lakes Region.... :)

Like that stopped you last spring.

Think, fer cryin' out loud man, THINK. New Glarus = Tourist town = Weekend Getaway with the Mrs. Aham23 = You sneak away to ride while she's at the day spa.

It has been a week, polling is over and New Glarus has won (even by Chicago standards). For the lone person who voted for Crystal Lake, PM me, I'd be happy to ride those loops anytime.

The tentative date is Sunday, April 27 so pencil it in people. I apologize to all the spiritual folks out there for the Sunday date, but if you want to touch the spirit, do the ride on a fixie with "Jesus as your lockring and God as your brake." ;)

That's coming from the newly-refurbished Huber Brewery. For you FIB'ers, Huber is the place where the Berghoff Restaurant had its house beer brewed.

The New Glarus ride is great - lots of hills for flatlanders to practice their curse words on. Feel free to drop me a line if you're looking for route info. The roads around there will typically have about 5 or 6 local teams training on them on a nice spring weekend.

New Glarus. I seem to remember some suffering in that area last June. In any case, color me a solid 'maybe' for that locale. That is, if you'll allow a mud duck to venture into Curdistan without additional fees.

Hills??? Maybe I'll just do laps in the parking lot while I wait for everyone to finish their ride. Better yet, I'll just show up for the brewery tour!

I think we will all get temporary visa. If not it wouldn't be the first time that I've crossed the cheese curtain incognito. Usually I do it on 2 wheels though to ensure that I don't draw the attention of the bovine border patrol.

The dairy air acts like a high altitude tent for the locals = we have no chance.

I have climbed in the area before though...

I will have to train specifically so that I can not blend in with the other FIBs ;)

Ah, but you're forgetting that you'll be accompanied by an officer from one of the highest offices in Wisconsin, and that's the Bike Fed. If anyone give us any guff, I'll flash my "Deputy Dave" badge, and if that doesn't work, I might just have to take the bullet out of my pocket...

Hmmm...

1. This ride wasn't his idea initially.....
2. This ride doesn't start or end at his home, or a location he is used to riding out of.
3. This ride contains hills - may be challenging.
4. This ride will have many people on it that he has never met.
5. This ride has riders on it that may very easily put a dent into his racing persona....;)
6. There are enough people on this ride not from the area that if he shows he would just be an average joe/not a celebrity.
7. He is not being paid for an appearance....

I'm thinking the hip-man isn't going to make it to this one. Just call it a hunch....

<big wink at ya Hip. We love you...really!>

I've thought about doing the MN IM bike portion, but April in the twin cities sucks (no offence). A long ride in 35 degree rain and wind holds no appeal.

For the others, yes, April 27th is still the ride date. I'm planning a preride 2-3 weeks before to test the route, everyone is welcome.

As for hills, the first loop looks pretty flat and the second has some but it's no HHH.
