New to the world of biking. But due to M.D. saying I have to get a new hobby other than 2 packs a day...... I took up biking.....got an '02 specialized allez compact and get 8 to 12 mi daily. (7 days a week) I really don't know enough to tell anyone anything other than how to really sweat. When you live in the lower south and ride a bike in august heat you know how to sweat.

We have a great trail locally if anyone want to try their luck later in the fall. Old railroad line converted to bike trail. 44 miles one way with rest stops and small towns. All new asphalt 10 ft wide.

Hi redjoe!

Hope you enjoy the forum. THe bike stuff will come with time. Much better for you than those 2 packs a day.

Take a day off somewhere.Burnout can happen.

Thanks shokhead,

I was told the only way to get stronger is to rest. Somehow it does not make sense but I know for a fact it does work. Got to go for now... LBS owes me a tune up and I just might see something in there I need.

Yes and no. When I first started riding, I would take one day a week off, usually Fridays. However, in the past three months, I haven't taken one day off, averaging 21 miles per day.

I keep thinking I am going to burn-out, but on days I decided to take off, I start to feel like a lazy, good-for-nothing slug, and end up going out "for just 20 minutes or so." An 90 minutes later when I return home, I feel so much better, both physically and mentally.

The only thing that is slowing me down now is the shifter from the front derailleur is broken and I have to keep a death grip on it to keep it in on one ring. Gets very tiring and I haven't gone much beyond 25 miles since it happened. Usually, on the weekends, I average 40+ miles per day.
