I am headed to the fair city of Eugene for Turkey day with the inlaws and would like to take advantage of the lovely non-tax status on a good light rigging, and perhaps some winterwear. Any Suggestions? I am looking for a light around the $150 range....

THank you in advance!

:D

I don't live there, but I've made a couple bike shop runs when I've been down there.

I know there's an REI on 2nd, maybe?

Then Paul's Bicycle Way of Life has a few stores around the same area that cater to different bicycling types if I remember correctly. The road bike shop guys were super nice and helpful.

A lot of the bike shops are in pretty good proximity of each other, and it wouldn't take much traveling to check them all out.

A local will be able to give you better info I hope.

From what I've heard, Hutch's Bike Shop is a homegrown Eugene classic.

Hutch's Bike Shop on 960 Charnelton St downtown is a good place to shop, and to look over the stock of high end road bike they have. Nice mountain bikes too.

Another place with a good selection of lights is REI, no sales tax. It's at 306 Lawrence near downtown.

Revolution Bike shop has some nice lights too, not sure if they will have the upper end stuff, but it's a fun shop to cruise. It's at 1061 2nd Ave, in Whitaker neighborhood.

Are you bringing a bike?

yeah, i am taking the train down on next tuesday and meeting up with the fam who are headed down saturday.. I am riding my bike 20 miles into seattle to catch it, then another 20 or so out towards the inlaws house in (crow?) i was planning on taking west 11th out of "downtown" by the University west. any experience on that route? is west 11th "friendly"? it's been a few months since i was down there, and it wasn't to ride that time....:D

I will definitely check out Hutch's & REI... for the lights. I am also in the market for a track bike to woof around on...

West 11th is not bike friendly, however, there is a nice bike path that runs parallel to 11th out of town. This path starts behind the fairgrounds at the end of 15th Ave.

I made you a map of my favorite way to get out to Crow from downtown Eugene. The map starts at the Amtrak station.

I like shifty's route. It is a good 'un. Biking out 11th is hairy and you have to take over a whole lane to make sure you don't get hit while dodging massive potholes. The Amazon creek trail is the way to go, though it can be confusing.

As for bike shops... eh. I've been to a lot of them recently because my friend is looking for a new bike and another friend built up a fixed gear. None of them had done anything to make me feel like I really want to go back. Hutch's is alright. The sales guy was nice, but some of the mechanics are asses.

Hutch's is home to some very cool vintage bikes if you have the time and are inclined. They have a sweet '83 Paramount with 50th anniversary edition C-Record that is unbelievable...unridden and hanging on the wall behind the counter. They also have a neat orange road Schwinn form the same era.

I've always had good luck there...but personalities differ. That, and I do almost all my own work, so I don't interract with them much.

I guess shops get to know customers over time, but just hanging around the shop I've seen some awesome free service given to all types of bike riders, from homeless guys with flat tires to University race team kids needing something tweeked. Some of the wrenches offer community mechanical classes, and they always drop what they are doing to answer a question. As LBS experience goes, Hutch's is hard to beat, as evidenced by a very loyal customer base.:)
