I finished my first goal of the year this spring and did a 110 mile ride to my in-laws by myself. I should have taken someone with me. The next goal is to ride http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ar/russellville/491118394. Its not that long but it is steep. I have taken vacation the week of Thanksgiving and since no mon for fun, this is what I will be doing. I may talk the wife and kids into camping on the Mt. if it is not too cold. Unlike the first goal I have been training some for this one so hopefully it wont hurt as bad. I have about 60 miles to break the 2K mark which is the last for the year.

How is everyone else doing on their goals?

Not good. I wanted to ride 5,000 miles this year, but I have taken too much time off for traveling. I knocked it down to 4,000, but that'll be tough to accomplish with only 4 weeks left for my riding this year.

I also thought of doing a metric, but that didn't happen either...yet.

Congrats b_young!

I am at just over 1600 miles for 2007 (started in late April). My goal is to reach 2k by year end. Going to be close. I'm trying to get 250 miles a month in but with Holidays coming, I'll really have to schedule well or get some longer rides in.

Congrats. I was out for 3 months and I am 1000 miles aways from my goal of 3500 for the year. I won't make the 3500, but I will break 3000 and in my book, that's not bad for 9 months. I have not gotten my century ride yet, but hope to still give it a crack before the year is out.

that is a pretty good looking ride. 1500 ft of climbing in the last 3 miles looks tough. I wish I had a climb like that on a good low traffic road. I regularly ride off the mountian here but the climb back up is only about 550 ft in just over a mile. I could do it three times I guess. Do you ride back down (and back home)?

It's not Offical because i didn't get my Computer installed until late but i calculate
over 1300 miles for me this year. That's up from 0 in `06

*Not including my spin class mileage

I really want to do a big ride next year.... it would be nice to take a little week long adventure!

For 2007 I wanted to ride my age, which also happened to be a metric century and at the time 12 miles longer than my longest ride to date. That was accomplished 27 May. To make this real I thought I should do it again, and did so 8 September at an organized ride in Delaware. A very flat state. I had set a total miles for year goal at 2000. Up from 1800 in 2006, but I achieved that also on 8 September. So that goal has been reset to 3000 miles. Normally easy to achieve, but didn't factor in the fall weather in SE PA. Riding is down to about 60 miles per week. Hope to get 32 miles in Wednesday to bring year to date to 2700. My final goal for year, which I didn't think was possible back in the spring, is get my weight down to 220 by end of year. Currently stuck at 230, but I can smell the 220. That would be my lowest weight in 20 plus years.

I haven't done it yet. The traffic is light especially in the week. The ride home should be easy providing my brakes don't give out. I will see how I feel once I get to the top and rest a while. But it is steep so I may opt for a ride home or camping. My 110 wasn't exactly easy. I almost called it quits after the metric century and I found out my saddle sucks for distance. http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ar/russellville/493851887

My ultimate goal is to ride in the Tri Peaks Tour in a couple of years. It is about 300 miles in 4 days ending on Mt. Nebo which is what I am riding next week.

Good job on the metric's.

I am stuck at 245# and don't see it getting better anytime soon. I will make it my goal next year to get below 200# but it is going to have to be done with diet. Riding by itself is not doing it.

Congrats! That's a huge accomplishment in my eyes. I look forward to being able to go 10 miles right now. So kudos!

I am glad I only have less than 60 miles to go. I am not sure I would be able to make it if it were too much more than that for the reasons you are listing. Don't give up I am sure you will make it. I hope the weather stays nice for you.

I am 190 miles short of my goal of 1000 miles in 2007. I just started riding on August 10th. I should be able to make it, if the weather allows. Wish me luck.

b-young, check out this ride. Similar to yours in elevation gain (OK not quite). I rode it once back in the summer but too much has gotten in the way of my riding recently so I would have a hard time riding it right now. I did the 12.5 mile DAR loop today (just got home a little bit ago) in my fastest time ever though. I am liking the moonsaddle better each time I ride it. Also, I am not really loosing weight either. I work a swing shift and work weird hours (and thus sleep weird hours). Well thats my excuse right now.

I like it. Congrats on the new speed record. I use to hate hills, kind of still do but I am forcing myself to ride them. I hope I remember to take pictures of some of the S turns on Nebo. I am still not sure I can climb it.

I just ordered a brooks champion flyer, I only heard about the moonsaddle last week in your post. I may look at that if the brooks isn't what I expect.

What do you do? I work in the Nuke industry so I am vary familiar with 12.5hr swing shifts. I like the time off with it but the day/night switches suck. I am in a class for another year working close to normal hours but it has lots of stress, no walking and lots of food because of boredom. That is the primary reason of no weight loss. I ride more so at least I haven't gained yet.

Last year I rode 1,200 miles mostly commuting. I set a goal to double that amount. Well Now I am close to hitting 5,000 miles mostly commuting. Since I killed my initial goal my revised goal is to ride all winter.

You didn't just kill it. Thats more like stomping it in the ground and telling God it died. Excellent!!

You, Jaxqtr, and 51 put up numbers I can't even imagine right now. I am still excited about 2000 just because it is getting close to me justifing buying the bike and paying for it with the gas I saved. I am shooting for 3k next year but that seems a stretch to me.

I also want to ride state line to state line next spring. Its a little less than 300 miles and we are planning on about 4 days just to not kill us. That is why I ordered the Brooks.

An amazing ride home tonight. I pulled out of work going downhill at a high rate of speed and noticed no wind at all. I had a huge tailwind for 7 miles. I did the 7 in 20 min which was unthinkable for me. Then it happened, I had to turn north into the wind. The last 3.5 miles was done in 15 min. Still a personal best. 10.5 mile commute in 35min with trunk/pannier and about 15lbs in it.

I work at a water plant so I guess I make water...I work a 24 hr shift so with 4 operators that means I work ever forth day in a 28 day cycle but we work more 2 weeks and less 2 weeks (every other week). I get bored at work and eat too much (especially microwave popcorn). I also work part time as a carpenter.

I go to church with a guy that just started a job at a necular plant (browns ferry) and he said he would be training for a year. probably a very similar program your in.

Another guy at church got me into bike riding. He was overweight and had high chelostrol. He started biking 3 years ago (plus diet) and it mad a big change in him. I am a few year older than him and I dont have any health issues (so far) but he was getting in better shape than me (still is btw). He kept nagging me to get a bike so i could ride with him so I got my bike last August. Lost about 10 pounds last fall but seems like my body has adjusted to the new workload so I kinda stagnated at around 240.

The champion flyer should serve you well. The bike ride across state (read other post) sounds like a great idea. I looked at riding BRAT )bike ride across Tn) but couldnt fit it in my scedule.

Plain popcorn with no butter and heavy on pepper with no salt is about as good health wise as it gets. I had a lot of people laugh at me with the pepper instead of salt until they tried it, now there are at least 5 of us that eat it that way. It gives it some spice. I started riding for health reasons as well. I am a lot healthier now than I was 3 years ago but I still have yet to change my eating habits enough. That is my biggest challange.

24 hr shifts??????? Wow. How much sleep time is built in?
We work 4 nights, 3 days off,
4 days, 3 days off,
4 days of training (8hr days),2 days off
3 nights, 4 days off,
3 days, 7 off.

It looks odd but it follows the same pattern, so you can plan around it.

I didn't have any goals, so I'm doing fine.

I was hoping to go on the Turkey Roll this weekend...if it looks like it's not terribly windy, I'll go for it. Forecast is for 9 mph right now. The 30 mile route, not the long one.

you asked, 24 hr shifts??????? Wow. How much sleep time is built in?

none, and it gets tougher the older I get. I have been on this shift about 20 years now. I worked a real swing shift before that. days, evening, nights with a mixture of 8 and 12 hour shifts and I much prefer this shift. The mixture about killed me and I only worked it about 2 years. I never could adjust. With my 24 hr shift I wake up, go to work (6 AM) get off work (6 AM next day) go home and take a nap (till noon or so) and then enjoy my few days off.

PS I think the origional topic got derailed somewhere but since you are the OP I guess it's OK...

When I roll off of nights, I have been up for 24-36 hours but it does hurt. I now have to have a 4-5 hr nap. That is a lot of time off though, thats cool.

I did find someone to ride with me next Tuesday morning. I know I can ride the mt but it is going to hurt. We shortened the ride to a 2 mile warm up before the mt because he owns a lbs and needs to be there by 10am. I just hope I remember the camera. Its just steep.

I tried but did not succeed. I made it up to the rim trail which was 11ooft climp and extemely steep. But did not reach the top. We will go back next week maybe I will get it by the end of the year. Switchbacks are a killer.

Here is as far as I got.

1259' in five miles is not exactly a picknic so i wouldn;t call it a failure. How does the saying go

if at first you dont succede, try try try again...but seriously, you may not have reached your goal, but isnt the othery saying, it's the journy along the way that counts the most. Plus now you still have this goal to work on. reminds me of Barny and the case of the Drug Store robery. OK not quite the same. your goal is real, his case was made up...I figure you will complete this ride/challange next spring if not before.
