Cyclist robbed near S.G. River
A cyclist riding on a bike path along the San Gabriel River was robbed by two suspects on Monday morning, authorities said.
The victim was riding southbound on the east side of the San Gabriel River near Spring Street at 10:09 a.m. when he was punched in the face by a suspect, said Sgt. Dina Zapalski of the Long Beach Police Department.
The blow knocked the man off his bike, Zapalski said. While he was struggling on the ground, the suspect took his cell phone and rode off on his bike. The robber was followed on foot by a second accomplice, she said.
The victim suffered injuries to his face and was taken by a family member to a nearby hospital. The suspects are described as two Hispanic males in their late teens to early 20s, Zapalski said.
One suspect was described as very tall, wearing a baseball cap and a blue jacket. The other was described as short, with a buzzed haircut and dark jacket.
Anyone with more information is urged to contact LBPD's Robbery Detail at 562-570-7464.

This is bullzhit. The victim is one of my teammates, very mellow mannered nice guy. The bike jacking occurred n the SGRT, near El Dorado park. The stolen bike is a red and black Cervelo R3, full Dura Ace. If you spot anything like this for sale, please PM me, I have the serial #. Be aware of your surroundings and watch your back when you're on the MUPs.

Post a stolen bike announcement on Craigslist.

Wow. It almost seems as though those guys knew what bike would really be the prize.
Hope the victim gets his bike back and justice done. I have been down that trail many a time, but this makes me a bit wary.

Let's organize a Posse Ride. Where's Herb? We can ride the trail to look for possible suspects. Heck we'll kick *** on 'em even if they're innocent, just to teach them a lesson!:D
It's near the big holidays...the most dangerous time of year. You're going to read more than just bike jackings in the next few weeks. The cell phone is going to be used to make as many long distance calls as possible...they sell the phone time. The bike will either be given as a present or stripped for parts...the latter more likely and the frame and fork sold on the open market, usually shipped out of state. If you registered your bike through your local police/city dept, you have some hope.
Unless I'm riding in a group, I usually avoid the bike paths this time of year, except the beach path, because there isn't any traffic and it's too easy to get jumped and left for dead before anybody comes by to help. Fighting traffic seems safer.
Hi,
I heard about this earlier today through my club's Yahoo! Group. This is particularly upsetting because I personally ride on that section of bike trail with some frequency. Regardless, there are many people who use this path and many are children. We shouldn't have to worry about being mugged while cycling.

Start carrying your pepper spray and police batons.
Search SD Craigslist as well...a bike like that should be pretty hard to fence/sell without sending up some major red flags.

How does this happen? Did these guys jump out from behind a bridge or bush or something? Or were they just walking along and when the rider was going by they reached out and socked him? Do I need to be careful about passing pedestrians because they may rob me? Yuck!

There were two guys, one of them stuck their arm out, straight across the nose, and knocked him right off the bike .

I'm sorry, Pat. :( I hope your friend is okay. You know, that bike is replaceable, but he's not. I hope they find those thugs.

yeah, that sucks to hear, especially that the assaulted him for it-- I hope he's ok. When I first moved here I heard that stuff like that happened on the SGRT and stayed away from it for a long time.
It's possible that they'll get caught-- some kids put a brick through my windshield in Carson on saturday and I got a call from the Sheriffs office today that they have two kids in custody. One was turned in by a parent.

I avoid that sh*tty path as much as possible. It's too sketchy.
I hope 10 gangbangers die as retribution.

Do you think that it's really any worse than SART or Ballona Creek?
I have only heard of riders being hassled when they are alone on any of the paths. It pays to find someone to ride with.

I have no idea, never ridden either of them. I just know I don't make it a point to ride the trail. I've flatted on it so many times from broken bottles, almost died in the tunnels from people walking or people riding on the wrong side of the path, and just don't enjoy the smell of the stagnant water.
I actualy think it's really cool and it's great that it's there, it's just not my cup of tea. :)

It's hard for me to resist since it's just a few short blocks away from where I live.
I do make a point of yelling in the tunnels and avoiding the glass.
I hate the trash and graffiti.

Thats why I love Angeles Crest, GMR, Azusa canyon, Angeles Forest and all the other climbs around here. If you go during the right time of the day, theres almost no traffic, no trash and no graffiti. It almost makes you forget you're in LA
