I'm looking for something for my wife that has an upright riding position, low standover, a chainguard and 3 or more speeds. The Electra Townie looks nice but is quite expensive. Any cheaper recommendations?

Thanks. Those options add up quickly. The department store Schwinn is looking like the best value.

Maybe, but with the Worksman you get a bike you can pass on to your grandkids someday.

What's your price range? Handlebar preferences...flat or cruiser?

You'll be better off with 2nd hand.

I can guarantee that cycling with wives is usualy about a 6 week fad. After 6 weeks it'll be gathering dust in the garage.

Take her to the shops and have her test the bikes. If you want her to continue riding then getting a bike she is comfortable on is what you need and it may or may not be a "womens specific" bike. If the bike is to be a surprise then that can be tough but being uncomfortable on a bike is one of the quickest ways to get a new rider to quit cycling.

My wife has a Sun Retro Alloy that she likes. The three speed in hub with brake is around 289.00 in bike shops here.If fits her well as she does not get along with dérailleurs. She also has a Giant Revive DX. seven speed in hub but a lot more money around eight to nine hundred in bike shops. But very good if she has back trouble or anything.
