Utility Cycling - Good writeup about gearhubs

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Its like those scary movies from the 50's that show us what life would be like had the Allies lost WWII.

Here's an electronicly translated version of the article... (http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.radratgeber.de%2FRadratgeber_Html%2FKapitel_Html%2F106_Schaltung_119.ht ml&langpair=de%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8)
Edit:
I love this translation: "When (some) Hub circuit is a resignation brake."
That makes for funny reading in translation. I hope I do not sound that bad when I try to produce French. Ugh. Probably do. Resignation, never do, I.

Heh, I still laugh at resignation brake
So here's another interesting article comparing different hubs, including some interesting stuff concerning SRAM i motion 9 speed compared to Shimano Alfine 8 speed. Amongst others, a better stallioning of speeds and wheel dismounting that's less tedious then the Shimano, but the SRAM is 100€ more.
Seems a lot of these things aren't intended for hauling weight. There's special cargo and tandem hubs that ought to work for that, though.

My SA-8 did not last 5 months on my XtraLite before I killed it.

How are the recent sturmey archers, They any good? i was under the understanding that SA hubs where better as their basic design was better and sram/shimano had to come up with all sorts a bollocks to get around strumey patents

Think that was because it had to work hard, or it's just rubbish?
I really like the look of that hub, except for quality question marks and the direct drive first gear, which must mean you need a very small chainring (for large wheels), and therefore a lot of stress on the chain and torque going into the hub. That can't help reliability.
I like the look of its ratios. 6 closely and evenly spaced gears plus an extra low and an extra high makes good sense to me.

I think it was the hard labour more than the build quality.
