View Full Version : My Helmet Actually Caused Me Injury!!

Well, not while riding on the bike though. :p
I was changing in the restrooms, and I tried to put my helmet on top of my backpack, which was on one of those foldable shelf things they have. It kept slipping down, so I buckled it to the carry strap on top of the backpack. The helmet didn't slip anymore, so I resumed dressing. While I was adjusting my socks, WHAM!! The helmet + backpack (with around 15lbs of stuff in it) landed on my head, and I blanked out for a couple of seconds. The helmet made the falling on my head part hurt more, because instead of getting hit by the soft backpack, I got the hard knock of plastic instead.
Anyway, just wanted to share a funny story with you guys now that I'm not cursing my helmet, rubbing the top of my head in pain, and lamenting the demise of one corner of my laptop (still under warranty and only the CD drive is affected, so no worries about that). :o

No, you caused the injury. Never store heavy objects above head level.

Does that use all up your helmet's one-time protection coupon?

Thumbs up to your razor wit.
A perfect A&S response!

Or he could've moved further left.
Seriously though, the only reason it was above head level was because he was bending down. At least that's how I read it. I think you were a bit hasty in your desire to appear knowledgable.

...and now your backpack is going to get onto backpackforums and argue with all his non-helmet wearing backpack buddies about how the helmet saved his life today. Your laptop on the other hand will be posting on laptopforums about how helmets aren't worth a pinch of poo :p

Appear knowledgeable:eek:
Anyway, the rule still applies. Don't store heavy objects above head level.
Or perhaps, wear a helmet when putting on socks and shoes.

Do you get subjected to weekly 'Safety Meetings' at your workplace, too? I hate those things.

I think that's a wise suggestion. I don't take my helmet off until I'm sat at my desk. ;)

Far far worse, I used to audit my department's workplace on a monthly basis for violations such as this and pass out corrective action requests. I haven't done this in a long time, instead now I occasionally assess potential suppliers for their manufacturing floor safety among many other things. Ooops, now I said it and am sure to regret doing so.

Hahaha.
Former safety committee member here too...
...but we don't have many people hurt here either. We have a full machine shop and make big metal parts.

I got a pretty funny picture in my head of this incident. ThanX for today's chuckle! :D

Blame your socks!
+1
Or if you went around barefoot or wore your cycling duds at work you would have avoided the whole sorry episode.
