I'm looking for a rear tire for climbing power only. The surface is a combination of bare tree roots and loose rocks. I'm not interested in cornering, downhill, hardpack or a 'fast' cross country tire. To give you an idea imagine your in a race thats 50 yards uphill with a 10 percent grade. In the past I've been very happy with the 'tried-n-true' Panaracer Smoke. Are there any tires that are clearly better climbers??? What do you think??

Klein, I understand what your saying and I wont disagree with you. In my case the tire I have on the back isnt suited for all out climbing. Its an all purpose tire that came stock on my bike. Right now I can overpower tire, meaning I get wheel spin when I'm cranking down hard. My weight balnce is what it should be for climbing and I've lowered the pressure as low as I can go without running the risk of pinch flats. The short hills I ride up are such that if you ride a low gear and tried to 'spin' you'll loose your momentum and fall.

For dry conditions I like the Hutchinson Python. I would also recommend going tubeless if you want to run lower pressures for better traction without worrying about pinch flats. Since speed is not your concern, running at 30 psi will give you great traction with the Pythons
