Bicycle Mechanics - hanging frame for painting

I tried searching, sorry if it's been covered in the many painting threads...

Anyone have any tips on the best method for hanging/mounting a frame for repainting?

I hang it by a wire from the seat tube. Find a place where you can hang it at a height so that you can easily reach both the top and bottom of the frame.

I made a crappy wooden structure to hang mine, and when I hung it I made a quill type seat post that I had the cord go to and then had one go into a hole in the headtube.

Took ~10 minutes to make the structure and not much longer to make the post.

I've used coat hanger wire through the head tube, and I've run a piece of pipe through the BB shell. I think once I ran a coat hanger through through the seat binder bolt hole, and might have used a fender eyelet once. The BB pipe is nice to grab on to and hold the frame at different angles and to keep it from twisting while suspended by a wire.

A piece of 1/2" conduit down the seat tube, other end horizontal in a vise. Another piece of conduit to stick in the bb shell or head tube to pivot the frame for the best shot with the paint gun.

I use a vertical 1" pipe on a fixed base through the head tube. It allows me to swing the frame around and hit it from all angles. I spray it upside down first and then flip it over and spray it rightside up. Dr. Deltron uses something similar.

I do the same thing. A piece of conduit, affixed to the side of a small rolling cabinet, which allows the frame to be spun, rolled around my shop, and flipped over easily.

The conduit/pipe idea is neat. I'll do that next time (which is, I hope, soon!)

A short dowel in the repair stand will work, providing the base is heavy enough to keep it from tipping over.

The pictured grommet is VERY helpful!

So check the plumbing section for it.

I just mount an old seatpost on the frame and put it on a repair stand. This way I can keep changing the frame position as I paint so can get it from all angles. Sure, the repair stand will get a little overspray on it but no harm done.... :)
