Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The new projected is a hand powered trike…
For an 11-year-old girl that has no use of her legs.
The plan is for a 3 speeds with a coaster brake… wheels at 15 degrees… laid back seat.
Started today…

That's going to be a good looking bike when done and I know it will make her happy. Good luck and have fun riding.

Be sure to post pictures of the finished product. It's looking good in the early stages!
I'm sure the rider will be thrilled.
You've got a bit done there. I must spend too much time in my moaning chair :D
Looking good. I'll be following this thread with interest.

A bit more done today.... and a lot of thinking
Making hand peddles is tricky...
I think they have to work together [this is how the Olimpic bikes work but I've never seen one up close]
Still thinking one this one.
Hub [3speed Nexus** should be here monday... have to make it into a wheel... never done that so that should be fun
So todays pichttp://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee220/Leigh_caines/Br014.jpg
I think they have to work together [this is how the Olimpic bikes work but I've never seen one up close]
I've seen a couple up close and they were using both hands together ie, both cranks were on the same side of the bottom bracket. Had a strap over the back of the hand too.

<Had a strap over the back of the hand too>
thanks mate...
I wonder why... you wouldn't think your hand would slip off
I'll try and get to see one
I would think one of the most important criteria for an 11 year old girl would be the color!!! Have you been able to think that far ahead???

What a cool project - you are going to make her the happiest girl on the planet when she rides it.
We have a number of Handcyclists that ride the TT's in Charlotte. Here is a link to a photo of one of them if that will help. It shows the cranks being positioned together as well. There are probably some better photos and different views if this helps any.

Leigh,
Excellent job! I was going to recommend bobby's first link, as the page (near the bottom) actually contains measurements for a child's hand-powered trike, but it looks like you're waaay ahead of me.
Hope she loves it.

Job well done - good on ya!

Still a few things to do...
Foot plate so she can get from wheelchair to bike and back on her own.
The hand peddles that a mate is making are near finished
Another Mate is building a wheel with a Nexes Hub so she'll have gears
And then off to Powdercoaters to become "Pink"
Then we 3 [Main man Bob, Jim with workshop that has a great old lath and myself who keeps coming up with these podjects] will be looking for a new one to make.

This is the 'one before'
Riley's bike
The idea was for Grandpa to be able to take him... for him to be able to peddle as well

Leigh-
You have missed your vocation. Note that you have the white beard already but that is a fantastic gift for a young girl that is going to get a great deal of pleasure out of your creation. All you need is the red suit and the band of little helpers and I can see what you are going to be doing for the next 12 months.
Fantastic project that I hope you enjoyed doing. I think I can see one happy girl out on your weekend rides as a new riding partner.

Leigh,
That is one of the most thoughtful, touching and beautiful gifts I have ever seen, and I hope she continues to enjoy it for many years to come.
BTW, since there are no sides to the seat as a wheelchair would have, does she need a seatbelt?
You are clearly a saint.

I have to thank our two LBS (we only have two and they work so well together they might as well be one]
one for giving the back wheels
and one for the hub
Both gifts with no strings
This is a truly cool thing. I had to say "thing" because I mean the WHOLE thing. There are so many cool aspects to this thread and to what you did.
