Road Bike Racing - If this doesn't get you roadies to try cross, nothing will

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
This is why cross in Oregon ROOLZ!

Cross rocks. Mildly related side note, Trebon used to make some of my club's rides back in the 2003ish time when he was down here. Now he's rocking the national circuit like it's easy.
I'm amazed by how big cross is here in NC. The fields, especially the CX4 men AND women's are huge - and growing. It's really cool to see.
Hey Snuffleupagus-
Just out of curiosity, what have been your field sizes in NC?

Our first CX4 race of the season had over 100 guys in it! Just to contrast, our CAT-4 road race fields are usually 30-50 guys. 50 is a big CAT-4 RR. The CAT-3 RRs I've been in are about the same size.
The cross P/1/2 fields are tiny, usually less than 20 guys, and the CX3 races have ~30-50 guys. Masters fields have 50-60ish.

I'd love to give cyclocross a try.
Sadly, the "off season" for road racing down here is over summer, so there is no cyclocross.

More like turn me away.
My idea of fun is NOT hanging out with the dressed-down-urban-hippie-we're-too-cool-to-take-anything-seriously-crowd.
Although I appreciate the buzz that is building around my town Orlando, with the fixies dressed in messenger gear.
Green is good.

I have nothing against c-cross. It's the bone on bone caused by the lack of meniscus cartilage in my right knee that would protest. Oops, time to take the Glucosomine tabs. Gotta run (I mean limp).
Cross rocks.

NC and cross just don't go together for me. I imagine a slight drizzle and 48 degrees and you guys in arm warmers screaming about how terrible the conditions are. :D Similar to when it snows 3/4" down there.
You need to coem race somewhere when it's been raining hard for 2 days and hovering around 31 degrees. Half rain/half snow. Thats when cross rocks. :p

You should see CA, then. Clouds in the sky and everyone starts getting worried. Below 60 and it's cold.

Yeah, I can imagine. :D
I was born and raised in Ohio. I rode yesterday and it was 64 degrees. Today when I woke up it was snowing, seriously. Anyway, I have family in NC and we went to visit a few years back. It snowed a little over an inch and they cancelled school. Resturants were shut down, highways closed due to pileups. It was comical.
You should incorporate some pig lagoons into the cross races in NC.

Yeah Winter showed up today in Ohio. Windy and cold. Those late ride descents are serious lessons of hurt.

I smell jealousy :D It's not my fault you guys live in the flat, frozen tundra.
No way, that's what cross is about, cold wet, crap. Nice weather is for crits.

In Virginia Beach one year they piled the 1" of salt onto 1/2" of snow.

I live in SC (Carolina) and I agree that anything below 60 is reason to bust out arm warmers. But I know what it's like to go on training rides when it's 107F and race in 95+ degree weather with 80% humidity.
Cross looks silly though, kidding, I think.

I'm a wuss. I don't like mud.
Also the whole get off, sling bike over shoulder, jump over things bit doesn't really appeal to me.
But I think a cyclocross bike would make a sweet commuter in a city with crap roads. (but I'm currently a poor student so instead I destroy cheap 'mountain' and 'hybrid' bikes while riding them around like a road bike - plastic cranks and brakes will be the death of me)
Here's a cross race for you.
Ohio Valley Cross Finale.

I happen to take cross seriously. I've been racing in NC for about 5 years now and when I first started I'd register for an A race because the payout was to 8 places and there were only 4 or 5 guys. Now it's become huge and very very competitive. And thanks to the weather there they have a Winter series in January. Trust me, I've froze my ass off at some of these races and you can't call this New England Yankee a wus when it comes to cold :D
Wish me luck at cross Nat's this Saturday :)

LOL. i would post one of vingris racing cross in which he is... packing heat, so to speak, but i think he would beat me up if i did. it's pretty bad, and to make it worse, he had it as his facebook picture for a day or two before he realized that his man garbage was on display. i die a little inside everytime i see that picture.

I need to blow it up and put it on his car next race.
And as I was eating, I kept coming back to the sad fact that you have never been to a cross race, yet seem to handily identify Gamm's ass covered in mud? :D WTF?

Cslone - looks like we're traveling in the same circles. I loved the green monster! First year for cross. Actually first year for all of them - mountain, road, AND cross. Came in second for overall gc in Women's B! I'm depressed it's over, how about you?
Nothing like a little mud. This was from Louisville.
