So its about time to replace the wheels on my fixed cross bike. I am looking for suggestions as to what to get. My budget is under $200. Will track wheels hold up? Its a steel frame, so I'm not worried about spacing, and I won't be racing the bike, just commuting and all the singletrack the gear can handle. I just don't want to get a set of wheels and then have them be trashed. Also, it has been suggested that I get 29er wheels and run cross tires on them. Any thoughts?

Thanks for helping one who doesn't race,

-Rob.

Are you saying that their fixed wheels will hold up off road?

Also, how wide a tire will a 17mm rim take?

28mm is usually the recommended maximum for 17mm mavic cxp33 rims - I plan to run a 35mm CX tyre with 25mm rims

i've been running the same set of formulas to deep v's for almost three years. commuting, trails, curbs, crashes. a few thousand miles. i've never had a set of wheels take the abuse these have. i run anything up to 35s on them.

I've been rampaging around with IRC Mythos CX 42mm tires on my CXP33 rims for more than a year.

An absolute blast.
