View Full Version : DFW BF's Holiday Get-together! (planning phase)

Who's up for another North Texas / DFW meet & greet some time in December? Temps are cooling off so it's a good time to find some food, and perhaps some beer! Other than Dec 15th, and obviously the days right around Christmas, my schedule is fairly wide open. So let's start throwing out some dates and see what size of a turn out we can get!

My hubby and I are total newbies, but are always up for a new adventure (and a good beer!). We'll keep an eye on this thread and see if we can join you.

I'm In! Pretty much anytime. Maybe a weekend night? Friday or Saturday night?

A Friday or Saturday evening probably would be best. What about Friday the 28th? Too many people traveling? The other option would be the 21st or 22nd. My wife wouldn't be able to attend, but she's probably had her fill of bicycle talk for a while anyways. (that was more or less her words, so don't think I'm being mean ;))

If those two weekends are too busy for everyone, we could also wait for a week or two after the new year.

I'm in.
Given the weather I suggest an Indoor venue this time (and no kamikaze bugs).

And if anyone is interested in meeting Dale Brown from Classic Rendezvous he is going to be in
town towards the end of Jan.

Work is slow this time of year for me, lets make it an all day thang! I will try to attend.

So let's start throwing out some dates

and locations? I might try to make this one if possible.

Let's light this candle!

As long as I don't get stuck working late, I can make almost any time/location.

I'm in! We definitely need an indoor venue this time and someplace that has beer!!!

Indoors and beer sounds good to me. The more choices in beer and the better beer the better in my opinion!

Where you been hiding? Haven't seen you around lately. Holed up for the winter?

In December, I'm free up to the 24th

I mostly ride solo this time of year. I'm working on base and the it's hard to do that when you get out with a group. Even when your out with a group whose objective is to ride at a "base pace", my base pace may not be the same as the next person's. I decided I wanted to do it right this winter so I've been riding solo for the last few weeks and it's been working out great. I've also only been riding my fixed gear. Geared at 42/15 it's perfect. The gearing will go up as offseason training progresses.

Too bad we don't have one of these in the DFW area: http://www.yardhouse.com/ - they have like 60 beers on tap, so even an IPA snob like me has several choices. Anyone know of anything remotely similar to this in DFW, cause I'd be all in for that. 'Course the next morning's ride would be questionable.

I see ... Kevin is Mr. Discipline :D

I was born without that gene. I tend to use my commuting miles as base. On the weekends I still go out and tear it up. Over on the racing forum it's pretty split about what one should be doing this time of year anyway. I lose too much speed if I lay off the gas all winter.

However (back on topic), if we get this meet-n-greet set up somewhere close (to me) or near the rail, I'll go on my fixie!!! We been wanting to do that, might as well kill two birds eh.

Don't get me wrong, I tear it up too. I tangled with the OAS group a couple of weeks ago. I don't get to ride much so the riding that I do MUST be done wisely. *Edit* I agree about losing too much speed when you completely lay off for 3-4 months. I'm doing my share of interval work.

One suggestion that I have for a meeting spot is the Irish Rover in Frisco. Lots of good beer on tap.

Looks like my kind of place (beer-wise anyway). Definitely a haul from the North part of Frisco, but I'm probably game for a place like that. How's the food at this place? The Irish Rover has some good eats (fried and unhealthy as it is).

Well I would go, but I am under the drinking age. Root beer it is! Oh wait that's a soda, yuck:(

Don't know if EJ123 would make it too far past the doors of either the Ginger House or Rover. Been meaning to make it up to the Irish Rover sometime, but either works well with me, or we could consider BJ's Chicago style Pizza and Brewery as a more under age friendly choice if EJ or Stray Cat or others not quite 21 wish to make it.

I think Rover should be no problem - I doubt they'd card unless you order a drink. Most places in Collin County are restaurants that happen to serve alcohol, so underage shouldn't* be an issue. Dallas might be a different story.

* - when a place is decided upon, we should probably make a call to verify age-restrictions

ETA: I just stopped by the Rover. It is over 21 in the bar area after 9PM, but no problems in the restaurant side at any time. On the down-side, they still allow smoking in the bar area, which I thought they had done away with.

The Irish Rover is good both food and beer, but may be far for some people and not a good bike destination. A new pub opened in old downtown Plano right off the DART rail, The Fillmore. I was there last weekend it is an irish style pub with good food and many beers. It would be a easy to get to by car, bike and rail and we would be able to thrash around the area on our fixies! We could even stage an alleycat, oh yeah now we're talking. Who can print some spoke cards?

No fixie here, but if the wife doesn't come maybe I'll ride over and catch a ride back with Jeff (if he's agreeable to this plan).

 as it is I'm sending one lady out the door just as a new mistress is coming in. But no, no fixie for me right now. If I move closer to the McKinney/Frisco area and have more room I will be looking for a track bike though. But for now, 4 is all I can have, and can't let go of any of my current vintage steelies to make room for a fixed.

Vintage steelies make the best street fixies. Give one of them wenches a wardrobe change.

No need to let any of your current bikes go. Since all of them are geared, simply convert one of them to fixed or single speed. This can be done for cheap and it gives you something different to ride. Once you start riding fixed, the rest of your bikes may start to get neglected. I find myself picking up my fixed for just about every ride nowadays.

The agreement with my wife is I can keep as many bikes as I can store in the corner of the study in our apartment. Four is that limit unless I start renting the apartment above me as well.

There's a lot more room if you hang some from the ceiling.

btw, this weekend (12/1) I'll be in west texas (pecos, bahlmorea area) doing some scuba
classes so I can't make it then.

Ok, to get this back on track I suggest either BJ's (good mix of food and good beer) or Gingerman pub.

Friday evening the 7th, 14th or 21st
Saturday evening 22nd, 29th

Or after the new year?

The 14th is out for me, (the company Xmas party).

But if that date works for everyone else, don't nix it on my account.

15th is my company's party which is why I didn't include it. I'm guessing lots of companies are doing theirs that weekend.

Yep, mine is also the 15th, but that was only a proposed date - nothing is actually set yet (nothing like waiting till the last minute to plan something for 300 people ).

I'm in for pretty much whenever and where-ever.

BTW - anyone else headed out to the PBA rides tomorrow morning? I'm thinking DB1 unless it's looking rainy, in which case DB2 for me and th Mrs.
